Hampshire Seniors made an inauspicious start to the new season with heavy defeats by Wales and Middlesex in the National Over-60s Cricket Championship.
Hampshire’s A team lost by eight wickets to Wales at Hursley Park, with the B side suffering a six-wicket defeat to Middlesex in the Second XI competition. Struggling at 22-3, Hampshire were boosted by Paul Kerley (35) against Wales, but owed much to a 61-run seventh wicket partnership between Barry Goodman (46) and Martyn Collins-Ballands (26) for their eventual 164-6. Wales polished off the target with some comfort, John Cooke hitting an unbeaten half-century. Martin Hall hit 50 for Hampshire II, whose 160-6 was easily overhauled by Middlesex. Hampshire A are away to Gloucestershire on Tuesday. Sparsholt and Paultons, traditionally two of Hampshire’s most successful competition teams, face up in the opening round of the Davidslow national Village Cup at the Norman Edwards Ground on Sunday (May 1).
Tichborne Park have home advantage against Longparish, with past Lord’s winners Hursley Park paired with Sway at The Quarters, 1pm. Sunday’s fixtures: Amport v Langley Manor, Beehive Southwick v Parley, Bere Regis v Shrewton, Damerham v Follands, Hambledon v Easton & Martyr Worthy, Hursley Park v Sway, Oakley v Eversley, Sparsholt v Paultons, Tichborne Park v Longparish. This weekend represents the last (and in many cases the first) opportunity to get in some precious middle time before the Southern Premier and Hampshire League seasons begin next Saturday.
Havant and South Wilts are among a cluster of clubs who have yet to bowl or face a ball on grass. Here's a selection of club fixtures for the weekend: Saturday Bashley (Rydal) v Normandy (11.30), Bournemouth v Bournemouth University, Hambledon v Bishops Waltham, Longparish v Hook & Newnham Basics, Paultons v Bashley (Rydal) II, Sarisbury Athletic v Fair Oak, South Wilts v Corsham, Sparsholt v OTs & Romsey, Totton & Eling v Calmore Sports, Trojans v Southampton University, Ventnor v Hampshire Academy (Steephill). Sunday Havant v Portsmouth University, New Milton v Winchester University. Monday Dorchester v Fawley (ECB Cup), Havant v Hampshire Under-17s. Southampton University’s students are off to a flier in the BUCS Championships with back-to-back nine-wicket wins over their Swansea and Surrey counterparts in Premier B South. In both games, the Wessex bowlers took all ten opposition wickets – Swansea being rushed out for 121 - a total Southampton polished off in quick time through Ryan Parnell (69 not out) and skipper Fred Wilson (25 not out). Paceman Satbir Mann took four wickets against Swansea and another three as Surrey were bowled out for 151 at Normandy. Parnell was again to the fore in the victory chase, hitting an undefeated 79 alongside 59 not out by Jake Fish. Southampton’s next match is against arch rivals Bournemouth at Totton & Eling on Wednesday week, May 11. Emerging off-spin all-rounder Brad Taylor has joined Hampshire’s growing – and worrying – injury list after damaging his ankle ligaments in a bizarre fall on the lower staircase leading on to the Ageas Bowl outfield before start of play on the second day of the drawn Second XI Championship match with Somerset II.
Taylor, who skippered England in this year’s ICC Under-19 World Cup, could be sidelined for the next month. Putting on a brave face, he is hobbling about on crutches, wearing a moon boot. Taylor, who is due to captain Hampshire’s Academy side in the ECB Southern Premier League this season, has joined Fidel Edwards, Reece Topley, and Gareth Berg in Hampshire’s growing injury list. The Somerset match, in which Jimmy Adams scored a first innings century, ended in a draw, with Joe Weatherley scoring 99 in the second innings before edging a catch to slip. In Taylor’s absence, Weatherley will take charge of the Academy side on a temporary basis. He captains the team against Ventnor at Steephill on Saturday, and in the opening SPL game against Burridge on May 7. Hampshire II shared the spoils with their Somerset counterparts, each winning one of the two ECB County Second XI T20 matches at the Ageas Bowl.
Hampshire’s opening 12-run win was more comfortable than the result suggests, with Somerset sinking to 87-8 as they chased their hosts 171-4 before an unbroken ninth wicket stand of 72 lifted their eventual response to 159-8. Fifth-wicket pair Lewis McManus and Ryan Stevenson shared an unbroken stand of 69. Scores: Hampshire II 171-4 (McManus 48*, Stevenson 37*, Jake Goodwin 29, Tom Alsop 25) Somerset II 159-8 (Bess 45*, Leask 33, Brad Wheal 2-22, Josh McCoy 2-30) Hampshire II won by 12 runs. Johann Myburgh, a Kolpak registration with Hampshire in 2011, was Somerset’s match winner in the second game, hitting an unbeaten 77 as the visitors chased down 151-5 to win by eight wickets at a canter. Joe Weatherley earlier hit a half-century for a young Hampshire side. Scores: Hampshire 151-5 (Weatherley 53, McCoy 30) Somerset 155-2 (Myburgh 77*) Somerset II won by eight wickets. Lymington's Ryan Scott (103*) and New Milton recruit Tom Arnold (101) hit centuries as Southampton Solent University seconds went on a run rampage against their Plymouth counterparts in the BUCS Second XI Championship at Totton & Eling's Southern Gardens. Solent made 394-6 and bowled Plymouth out for 103.
Trojans face King Edward VI School in an Edward Osmond sponsored twenty20 challenge match at the KES school ground, Wilton Road, Shirley, this/Thursday evening, 6pm.
KES were narrowly beaten by four runs by Peter Symonds College in an Altham Trophy thriller yesterday. Charlie Bolton hit 70 as KES fell four runs light chasing a PSC total of 140, enlightened by a breezy 42 from Sparsholt teen Tom Foster and a late 35* from Jack Dancer. Left-arm spinner Greg McKenzie took 5-8 for KES. Liphook & Ripsley expect to be without spinner Elliot Hawkins, who plans to remain in Perth WA after a winter with Suburban Turf club Applecross, but there are plenty of positives as the East Hampshire side looks forward to starting its Southern Premier League Division 1 campaign against Andover at Ripsley Park on May 7.
Lead all-rounder Suman Ganguly, who took 32 wickets in addition to scoring 643 runs last summer, and 34-wicket strike bowler Sean Burton will be joined by Dan Wrenn, who has returned to the Liphook fold from Hartley Wintney, and three promising youngsters. Hampshire Under-16 opening batsman Gabe Broadhurst has joined from Petersfield, left-armer Jack Campbell from Steep, and quickie George Neave, from Headley. They are all expected to play in Saturday’s final pre-season warm-up match against Alton at Ripsley Park. Rowledge have again recruited from the I’Anson Competition as they prepare for their campaign to push for promotion from the Southern Premier League Division One.
Ground improvements have opened the door for promotion to the ECB Premier Division and Rowledge hope to have built a squad capable of making that giant leap. Apart from their new overseas player, New Zealand-based Sushant Balajee, Rowledge have signed three other likely all-rounders: Jamie Teale, from SPL2 side Hartley Wintney (relegated last season), and Jake Austin and Joe Randall from I’Anson clubs Tilford and Headley respectively. Teale begins the season under suspension and will have to watch the opening month or so of action. Rowledge will not be able to count on regular appearances by the Yates cousins, Chris Jnr and Ricky, but Chris Board is available for the whole season and will add to the many spin options available to captain Ben Wish. Randall – the son of Kingsley’s durable all-rounder, Nick Randall – had an excellent season for Headley in 2015. Austin has been a destructive force for Tilford since bursting on the I’Anson scene, regularly destroying bowling attacks, especially at the Green where damage has been inflicted on surrounding buildings and balls deposited in the Wey, never to be seen again. Whether he can hand out similar treatment to SPL attacks remains to be seen. Broad, teenager George Keeley (another spinner) and Wish himself all came from I’Anson clubs and last season Rowledge signed up Sam Moseley from Grayshott and Tom Gleave from Chiddingfold. Wicketkeeper Wish took over the captaincy towards the end of last season following the resignation of David Lloyd who remains one of the key top-order batsmen. Rowledge are again entered into the National Village Cup and will host Blackheath, the I’Anson champions, on Sunday, May 29 in their opening match. Carl Obert, Sports Editor, Farnham Herald. Mitchell Stokes produced the best countrywide individual bowling performance of the first round with figures of 7-24 as Basingstoke & North Hants ruthlessly crushed Totton & Eling by 164 runs in the ECB Royal London national club championship at Southern Gardens.
The outcome was inevitable once the draw was made at Lord’s. The Eels are in major rebuild after another player exodus - but buoyant about their immediate future, with 60 or more players, mainly raised from a thriving junior set-up, available to play in their four league sides. They put up a gallant fight against Basingstoke, reducing the visitors to 43-3 (Nick Edens 2-34) before Craig Williamson and Chris Jolley took the game away from them. Left-hander Williamson top scored with 88 (three sixes and 11 fours) for Basingstoke, whose total received a late boost from ex-Hartley Wintney player Chris Jolley (62), who biffed a 31-ball fifty. Earlier, opener Dan Belcher, who has joined from Old Basing, made 36 and teenager Max Harsham 31. Totton were never at the races chasing a formidable 277-9, but Nigel Bungay (24), Oli Perrin (24) and Toby Beresford-Power (27) at least made the Bountymen work hard for their wickets. They progressed to 98-3 (Toby Beresford-Power 27) before Stokes came on and the last seven wickets fell for 15 runs, leaving Totton 113 all out. Burridge successfully defended a modest 124-9 to beat Middleton by seven runs and clinch a round two visit to Ventnor on May 8. Dan Hewitt led the way with bat and ball, top scoring with 35 and later returning a key 4-18 with the ball. Burridge’s promising start – they were 49 without loss – dissipated when they slumped to 82-6, but Andy Stancliffe and Nick McMurray added precious runs to raise the score to 124-9. Two early strikes by McMurray (3-44) put Middleton on the back foot and when man-of-the-match Hewitt (4-18) took the prize wicket of Sean Heather (26) Burridge were on top. Jamie Thompson (31) kept the West Sussex side in it, but Hewitt and McMurray continued to make inroads, with Middleton eventually dismissed for 117. Elsewhere in the ECB Cup, former Bournemouth seamer Ed Denham took 3-26 to help Walsall to victory over Midland rivals Wombourne. Former South Wilts and current Solent University leg spinner Jake Foley took 2-18 as Colchester & East Essex crushed Enfield. * Former South Wilts run gun Tom Morton has made an immediate mark on his new club Ealing, where he is Director of Cricket. He hit 63* in a ten-wicket twenty20 win over Wimbledon. Hampshire opener Jimmy Adams marked his return from injury with a century on the opening day the Second XI Championship match against Somerset at the Ageas Bowl.
Adams, who missed Hampshire’s first two County Championship matches of the season with an ankle injury picked up on last month’s pre-season training trip to Barbados, hit 117, including a six and 16 fours. His hundred hauled Hampshire out of trouble at 72-4, doubling the score with Brad Taylor (34) and then sharing a 126-run stand with Ryan Stevenson (65) before the innings closed at 288. Former Academy left-armer Tom Barber went wicket-less for Somerset, for whom Josh Davey and Jamie Overton shared eight wickets. Former West Indies fast bowler Tino Best then clean bowled Ventnor-raised Adam Hose with his first ball to leave Somerset 3-1 at stumps. Southampton Solent University tied their opening BUCS Championship match against Cambridge – thanks to a run out off the last ball ! Chasing Solent’s 206 all out, the Light Blues dropped to 135-5 and, with two of the 50 overs remaining and their ninth-wicket pair at the crease still needed another 27 to win. Zimbabwean Richard Lock’s penultimate over went for 17 (Cambridge 196-8) and when Kieron Geyle’s first ball was hit the six, Solent appeared to have had it. Cambridge, now needing five runs off five balls, still needed a two off the last ball of the match. But it was only hit for one and Solent celebrated a dramatic run out as the pair unsuccessfully attempted a second run. Cambridge closed 205-9. The BUCS Premier A Division match a South Wilts ebbed and flowed as Solent recovered from 158-8 (Rob Walters 40) to post 206, with ninth-wicket pair – Olli Blandford (25) and Jake Foley (27) adding precious runs. Later Cambridge, having been 162-7, hauled themselves back into the match and tie it. Southampton University made the best possible start to their Premier B South programme with a crushing nine-wicket win over Swansea at Totton & Eling’s Southern Gardens. With pace duo Satbir Mann taking four wickets and Matt Warner three, Swansea were rushed out for 121 – a total the Wessex students polished off in quick time. Ryan Parnell cracked an unbeaten 69 and Fred Wilson 25 not out for SU, who played their second match against Surrey at Normandy today WED. Tom Phillis was the inspiration behind Winchester's opening BUCS Western Conference 2B 85-run victory over visiting Marjon. The Whitstable all-rounder cracked a boundary strewn 87 before taking three Plymouth wickets. Ben Chapman (70) and Jake Lee (33) provided a sound start for Winchester, whose batsmen really made hay before tea, with Phillis cracking four sixes and nine fours in a blistering 87 not out. The Kentishman shared an unbroken century partnership with Ben Dombrandt (40 not out) as the Winchester students raced to 262-3 off 50 overs. Phillis later took 3-30 and Nick Taylor 3-35 as Marjon were dismissed for 167. Winchester play Southampton University II at Wide Lane on Wednesday, 12.30. County 1

In-form Hampshire and Lymington cricketer Lewis McManus cracked an unbeaten century to set up a seven-wicket for Dorset over Berkshire in the Minor Counties Trophy at Falkland. McManus hit three sixes and eight fours in an undefeated 109, sharing stands with Mike Porter (23) and Luke Webb (57*) as Dorset cruised past Berkshire's 235 all out. Bashley Rydal spinner Sam Thomson took 3-28, including the wickets of the Morris brothers, Richard and James in consecutive deliveries.
St Cross Symondians have signed New Zealand one-day international left-hand batsman spin bowler George Worker as their overseas player for the upcoming ECB Southern Premier League season. It will be a second spell with the Winchester club for the 26-year old, who was New Zealand Under-19 captain when he made his initial visit in 2009, his run making potential being badly affected by a broken hand early on. Worker’s imminent arrival is part of a triple boost for St Cross, who will have Hampshire 2nd XI opener Joe Weatherley playing for them all summer, alongside new wicketkeeper Greg Hollis, a strength and conditioning coach at the Ageas Bowl. Worker, who hails from Canterbury, made four white-ball international appearances for New Zealand in Zimbabwe and South Africa this winter. He smacked a 38-ball 62 upon t20 debut against Zimbabwe in Harare and later played twice against South Africa in Durban. Worker, who has been a prolific run scorer and handy left-arm orthodox left-arm spin bowler in New Zealand provincial cricket for the past eight years, was subsequently included in the Black Caps squad for the first three ODIs against Sri Lanka in December, but he was not picked in the playing 11. He then sent a reminder to the selectors with a score of 159 against Canterbury – one of 13 first class hundreds he has made – which helped Central Districts win New Zealand’s one-day knockout final. Worker should form a formidable opening partnership with Shawford-based Weatherley, who has spent the past few seasons with Hampshire’s academy side. The former England Under-19 captain has been in good form in Hampshire colours this summer, scoring a midweek century against Surrey II, having made earlier big scores against Cardiff UCCE and Lancashire II. ECB Guidance Note: Safety Measures for Helmets within Recreational Cricket
The ECB has recently announced new helmet safety measures, which are being introduced with a view to reducing the risk of head and facial injuries within the game. The purpose of this brief note is to assist Leagues and Clubs at the recreational level to understand the key elements of these changes and what they mean. Players over the age of 18 The ECB strongly recommends that all adult recreational cricketers should wear helmets for certain activities, preferably which meet the most recent British Safety Standard (see below). This recommendation applies to batting against all types of bowling, wicket-keepers standing up to the wicket (who may as an alternative wear face protectors) and fielders fielding closer than eight yards from the batsman’s middle stump, except behind the wicket on the off side. Under 18s The position in relation to u18s currently remains unchanged, and is governed by the ‘ECB Guidance on the Wearing of Cricket Helmets by Young Players’ (www.ecb.co.uk/youngplayershelmetguidance). In essence, batsmen and wicket-keepers standing up to the stumps must wear head protection when playing or practising. That Guidance should be referred to in full for the position in relation to u18s. What do Leagues and Clubs need to do? Whilst it is strongly recommended that all adult recreational cricketers wear helmets in the on-field circumstances detailed above, it is not mandatory for them to do so. For the avoidance of doubt, Leagues or Clubs do not need to go above and beyond the ECB’s recommendation by forcing their cricketers to wear helmets. However, Leagues and Clubs in recreational cricket should ensure that their cricketers are made aware of the ECB’s above recommendation in relation to helmets, including the need to check that any newly purchased helmets meet the latest British Safety Standard. The ECB recommends that Leagues and Clubs bring the link above i.e (www.ecb.co.uk/helmets) to the attention of their cricketers and encourage all cricketers to carefully consider their own health and safety regarding helmet use. Leagues and Clubs should always ensure that they have adequate public liability insurance. Lymington and Hampshire's Lewis McManus is included in the Dorset side for Sunday's MCCA Trophy match against Berkshire at Falkland, near Newbury, 11am.
But Bournemouth's Chris Park will be behind the stumps. Dorset: Masoor Khan, Lewis McManus, Max Waller, Ryan Scott, Mike Porter, Luke Webb, Chris Park, Mark Wolstenholme, Sam Thomson, James Hayman, Jake Lilley, Josh Digby A century by Joe Weatherley was one of the few high-spots to emerge from a crushing 323-run defeat inflicted by Surrey II on a young and inexperienced Hampshire 2nd XI in a three-day friendly match on the Ageas Bowl Nursery Ground.
Surrey piled up massive totals of 400-4 and 382-7 in their respective innings, with Hampshire skittled for 97 in their first knock, Matthew Dunn taking 6-34. Weatherley hit a second innings 105 (19 fours) and shared a 155-run opening partnership with teenager Felix Organ (72) as Hampshire, having been asked to make a colossal and nigh impossible 696 to win, made 372 all out. Ryan Stevenson, recovering from a back injury, underlined his batting prowess with 97. Hampshire II host Somerset in a three-day Second XI Trophy match at the Ageas Bowl on Monday. Hampshire Seniors pre-season gym work is over, the rust brushed off and the WD40 applied. Now they're ready for action and Wales come visiting Hursley Park's lovely Quarters ground on Tuesday (1pm) for the opening Sixties Championship match.
Hampshire's choice is: Geoff Beale, Mike Swain, Terry Morton, Paul Kerley, Ian Farley, Andrew Yorke, Steve Mitchell, John Paine, Jim Smallbone, Barry Goodman, Matt Ballands. * Hampshire Seniors are anxious to point out their club is not a 'closed shop' and membership is open to all cricketers of suitable standard. Winchester & District Cricket has really moved into the 21st century with its midweek league and cup playing regulations.
When the opening salvos in the Tichborne Trophy twenty20 cup are fired next week, teams will be playing with pink cricket balls, experiencing batting power-plays for the first time and find bowlers penalised three runs each time they bowl a wide, which will not be re-bowled, except in the last over of an innings. Batsmen will have to retire when they reach 50, but can return to the crease after everyone else is out. Bowlers will, as before, be restricted to four overs each. Several local Southern Premier League clubs will experience the new t20 regulations next week, including Fair Oak, Hursley Park and Sparsholt. Next week’s ties, to be played on either April 26 or 27, are: Bishop’s Waltham v Owslebury, Chawton v Longparish, Fair Oak v Hursley Park, Rotherfield Park v Sparsholt. Newly promoted Portsmouth will have a new captain at the helm and a talented young Australian aboard when they launch their Southern Premier League Division 1 campaign against relegated Totton & Eling at St Helen’s, Southsea, on May 7. Richard Locke has succeeded Dave Henderson as captain – his predecessor having won the SPL3 and 2 titles in the past three years – while teenager Fraser Hay, a hard hitting batsman from the Melville Grade club in Perth, is the Southsea club’s overseas recruit. Highly effective in striking the ball a long way, Hay plays regularly in Melville’s First Grade side in the WACA pennant and has just helped the club win the Under-21 pennant. Hay, pictured, comes from the same Melville stable as Australia Test batsman Adam Voges, Drew Porter, Brad Thompson and Luke Towers, all of whom played SPL cricket in the past. He is also a handy right-arm seam bowler. Portsmouth have also signed James Christian from Havant and expect the bulk of their younger players to travel back from university when the season begins. “The club continues to prosper and rebuild. Dave Henderson will be an incredibly be tough act to follow, but we are confident we can hold our own in SPL1 with the squad we are assembling,” Locke says. Portsmouth, who celebrate 175 years of cricket in the city with a match against the MCC on June 26, open their season at Merrow on Saturday before hosting Lymington in the ECB Royal London national club championships at St Helen’s on Sunday, 1pm. |
