He shared a 150-plus stand with Australia's Adam Voges before Melville narrowly defended 295-5 to win by four runs.
Hay, who has a UK passport and is therefore eligible to play county cricket, made 664 runs (including a highest 159 against Bournemouth) and took 26 wickets for Portsmouth. He made over 750 runs for Hampshire second team.
