Bashley (Rydal) left-arm quick Tom Barber made his NatWest T20 Blast debut for Middlesex against Hampshire in front of a 20,000 crowd at Lord's last night and, under the gaze of the Sky Sports cameras, celebrated the wicket of Rilee Rossouw before his side crashed to a seven-wicket defeat.
Barber, who made two appearances for Hampshire during his two-year spell at the Ageas Bowl academy, arguably bowled better than his 1-32 return with the ball suggested.
He struck former South African Test left-hander Rossouw a blow on the helmet before he had completed his 60.
Alas, he didn’t shine with the bat, coming in last, he survived Karl Abbott’s hat-trick ball, but perished for a second ball duck to a late Gareth Berg inswinger.
Middlesex, who included former Southern Premier League stars Adam Voges (Bournemouth) and Ryan Higgins (Bashley Rydal), were dismissed for 135 – a total Hampshire polished off with time to spare.
Six of the Hampshire team had SPL connections, with skipper James Vince, Tom Alsop, Lewis McManus (Lymington) and Mason Crane having been groomed in the Academy, and Ian Holland (South Wilts) and Chris Wood (OTs & Romsey) currently playing in the league.
The identity of the fox which ran on to the Lord’s outfield towards the end of the game and tried to gatecrash the Members’ Pavilion is unclear. Suggestions are that it was a cunning ploy by Tom Barber to distract the concentration of the Hampshire batsmen …
