MARTYN James starred with both bat and ball as Basingstoke and North Hants moved up to second in the Southern Electric Premier Division One table with an impressive victory over Andover.
The all-rounder was the Basingstoke’s second-highest scorer with 59 as his side reached 242-8 from their 50 overs at May’s Bounty on Saturday, an innings anchored by captain Chris Froud (71), writes John Boyman of the Basingstoke Gazette.
However, it was with the ball that opening bowler James really did the damage, taking 5-32 from his 10 overs as Andover were dismissed for 147 in reply.
The victory made it five wins in a row at the start of the season for Basingstoke, who took advantage of Hook and Newnham Basics’ defeat to Hartley Wintney to move above their local rivals. They now sit second in the table, a single point behind leaders New Milton.
The hosts won the toss and elected to bat, but they lost openers Richard Vinn and Mitch Stokes cheaply and looked in a bit of trouble at 76-4.
However, Froud and James were able to turn things around, putting on 73 for the fifth wicket before Froud’s 92-run innings, which included 10 fours, was brought to an end on 71.
James took up the mantle, putting on 54 with Patrick Joseph (16) before being caught on 59, and the rest of the lower order also chipped in as the Bountymen ended their innings on 242-8.
The visitors’ reply got off to a bad start, again thanks to James, who dismissed opener Harri Williams with the score on 15. His dismissal brought former Hampshire man David Taylor to the crease, but James struck straight away, clean bowling Andover’s danger man with the first ball he faced.
That was a key moment in the game and when James claimed another victim, opening batsman Max Souter, Andover were in big trouble at 32-3.
Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals, with Patrick Joseph (1-28) and Graham Porter (2-30) both getting in on the act, while James claimed two more victims to complete his five-wicket haul.
The game got away from Andover, who were reduced to 97-8 at one point, but captain Matt Hooper (54) and wicket-keeper Alex Thompson (13) offered some resistance, putting on 50 for the ninth wicket.
However, they both fell with the score on 147, with spinners Matt Thankachan and David Pistorius getting the wickets as Basingstoke cruised to another comfortable victory
