So much for New Milton’s impressive six-match winning start to the season !
They were shot out for a meagre 48 in just 15 overs and beaten by seven wickets by Southern Electric Premier Division 1 promotion rivals Basingstoke & North Hants at Fernhill.
The game was done and dusted in 128 minutes, even allowing for a break between innings.
Ironically, Milton’s defeat was inflicted by a Basingstoke side bowled out for 50 themselves by new leaders Hook & Newnham Basics seven days earlier.
Martyn James (6-23) and Chris Chandler (4-24) bowled unchanged, darting the ball about off the seam and ripping New Milton out for their third lowest SPL total after 44 (v Portsmouth in 2005) and 46 against Burridge four years later.
“It all began to go wrong when I lost the toss,” confessed James Park, who suffered his first defeat since inheriting the Milton captaincy from Ryan Beck.
“They bowled well and put it in the right areas. We were probably a bit lose, everytime we nicked they caught it – seven times to be precise.”
New Milton’s 15-over innings is believed to be the shortest in Premier League history and accelerated speed of their defeat the fastest on record.
A catastrophic 15-ball spell between the sixth and eighth overs, which saw New Milton lose four wickets for one run – was the catalyst for Milton’s demise.
There was steady procession to and from the Fernhill pavilion after that as the Green & Golds were bowled out in 1 hour four minutes.
Basingstoke didn’t hang about in knocking off the runs.
Conscious of a batting disaster of their own the previous week, they tore straight into the Milton bowling, with Chris Froud (27) leading from the front.
Nick Elliott (2-8) and James Haggaty (1-13) at least got New Milton a consolation bowling point from one of the club’s worst days on the field in recent years.
Hook and Newnham Basics, who visit New Milton on Saturday, went top of after they beat Liphook and Ripsley by 198-runs at the KGV, where the visitors won the toss and elected to bowl – initially a good move as they took the early scalps of Ben Thane and Matt Love to leave Hook on 17-2 thanks to Suman Ganguly (3-55).
Kieran Thomson (13) and Matt Buckingham (29) got their side back on track, before the Willcock brothers Richard and Nick took the game away from the visitors.
Nick Willcock hammered a 44-ball 60 which included five sixes and five fours and five sixes and shared a fifth wicket stand worth 95 with his brother.
Richard Willcock, whose 85 included a six and nine fours, was then joined by Ben Allnutt (65) and they put on 116 in an excellent sixth wicket stand, which saw Hook to 304-6. .
Spencer Champ (4-22) and opening strike partner Shane Brewer (4-36), who ripped Basingstoke out for 50 the previous week, shared eight of the wickets as Liphook sank to 106 all out.
