A very familiar face will be missing when New Milton defend their unbeaten Southern Electric Premier Division 1 start against Liphook & Ripsley at Fernhill – skipper Ryan Beck won’t be there !
He was missing a first team game for the first time in 13 seasons, since 2003.
Beck, pictured, has 240 SPL scalps to his name bowling his off-spin, but has more recently been homing his skills behind the stumps.
“I broke a finger in our cup defeat at Ventnor, so keeping wicket has been a very painful process,” he explained.
“I’ve played through the pain barrier for most things over 17 years and have only been absent twice, but I’m down to play in the seconds at Portsmouth & Southsea and try and get some runs.
“I don’t think you can leave someone out just to accommodate an injured player, captain or not.”
Hook and Newnham Basics sit proudly at the top of the table after making it two wins out of two at the weekend.
Having won by nine wickets ay Bournemouth on the opening day of the campaign, their first home game was just as easy, even if the end result was only a five-wicket success over Rowledge.
Hook & Newnham Basics captain Matt Love wants his side to carry on their winning streak when they entertain newly-promoted Calmore Sports at the KGV.
Love said: “We are playing really well as a unit. As we are at home again, I hope we can keep our winning run going.”
Last weekend, Calmore enjoyed a three-wicket success against visiting Bournemouth, bouncing back after an awful opening day, when they were shot out for just 61 against New Milton.
Calmore Sports: Lavelle, Vann, Johns, Pegler, Holloway, Perry, Rose, West, Proudley, Wright, Woodhall.
Martin Miller has urged Bournemouth to “do the basics better” or face the prospect of a third straight SPL1 loss.
Bournemouth have just five points on the board following the opening two weekends of the campaign.
The Chapel Gate side host Hartley Wintney at Chapel Gate, a side who also have yet to win in the league this year.
Skipper Miller said: “We got what we deserved from the first two games so we can have no complaints. We would have wanted more than five points at this stage of the season, that’s for sure.
“We came up just short last week, largely down to our own doing, and the first day of the season was just a day to forget. We have just got to do the basics better than we are doing them at the moment and get back into a winning groove.
“Pitches at this time of year are not conducive to shot playing. Sides that are the most attrition win matches and we haven’t done that in the past two weeks.
“Had we done that I have every confidence we would have won both. If we don’t do it against HW, the same will happen.”
Bournemouth are without unavailable trio Ben Bridgen, Gurpreet Singh and Jake Hurley. Batsman Andy Hayward is recalled while all-rounder Jack Owens and seamer Salman Khattack also come in.
Bournemouth: Hayward, Miller, Badenhorst, Finnie, Kitson, Kidner, Matthews, Owens, Pack, Woodward, Khattack.
Hartley Wintney’s batsmen have fared better, but the North Hampshire side has still suffered consecutive defeats. The village side have suffered two defeats to open their campaign, but they have been against sides expected to challenge for honours.
Hartley skipper Jamie Teale remains upbeat despite the double loss and said: “We have bowled really well in both games against two of the top sides in this league.”
“Bournemouth have not scored many runs so far this year, so we will go there hoping to limit them to a low score again.”
Strike bowler Tommy Flanders is unavailable this weekend and is replaced by all-rounder Chris Saville.
In Hartley’s game against New Milton, the home side were bowled out for 157 from 35 overs as they never recovered from being 14-3. Aussie Aaron Wivell hit a quick-fire 27 off 19 balls, while Scott Baldwin also scored 27. Chris Jolley (47), batting at number eight, moved the total on, sharing an eighth-wicket stand worth 57 with Will Ross.
Hartley captain Jamie Teale (2-29) took a couple of early wickets as New Milton struggled to 29-2, but some good middle-order batting saw the visitors home.
Talking about the game, Hartley captain Teale said: “We got out due to poor shot selection, but we bowled really well.”
Big hitting Dave Taylor is looking for someone else to come to the run scoring table when Andover host newly promoted Premier Division 1 rivals Rowledge at London Road.
Taylor has held the Andover batting together in both this season’s games, hitting a remarkable 172 not out to secure a one-wicket win with a six off the last ball at Liphook & Ripsley.
Then top scoring with 40 as Andover managed a disappointing 154 all out before Totton & Eling beat them by four wickets at Southern Gardens.
No other Andover batsman has made more than 25 in the two games.
Like Andover, Rowledge have experienced a mixed start, beating Totton, but losing last week to Hook & Newnham Basics.
Andover: A Hooper, Augustus, Arnold, Treagus, Taylor, Souter, M Knight, M Hooper, Foy, Adams, J Knight.
Richard Dibden is hoping Totton & Eling reproduce the form they showed against Andover for the demanding trip to Basingstoke & North Hants.
“It was a good all-round team performance, bowling and catching particularly impressive. It was good to get over the line after disappointment not to win first game from strong position and nice to beat one of the fancied teams in SPL1.
