Kings’ School’s Nick Doubell (38) ensured Sparsholt a healthy 253 before Ruffell (5-51) got to work and cut through the Manor batting. Only Stevie Harris, with an undefeated 71, made his mark as Langley Manor sank to 169 all out. Hursley Park lay deep in Division 2 relegation trouble after a crushing seven-wicket defeat by newly promoted Bashley (Rydal) II who, in contrast, have won their last five games. Constant team changes at The Quarters, caused by all too frequent player unavailability, is causing Director of Cricket Ian Watson a major headache – numerous switches having to be made to the side once again. Only Zimbabwean left-hander Bothwell Chapungua 31) made much impression after Jonny Bettle (2-29) removed both HP openers. The innings was completely dismantled by off-spinner Josh Digby (5-16) (pictured right) and pace ace Sean Read (2-35) who caused four middle-order wickets to fall for two runs as Hursley crashed to 108 all out. Neil Thurgood (34) ensured there was no early Bashley slip up before Dan Friedman (26) and Callum Maher (21) led the side home. |
Paultons were set to inflict Portsmouth’s only second defeat of the season when they reduced their city visitors to 146-9 at Whitemoor Lane.
But an unbroken last wicket stand of 81 between former Hursley Park all-rounder Vickram Dawson (57) and Andrew Marston (40) turned the game on its head.
Paultons eventually lost by 40 runs to the Southern Electric Premier Division 2 title favourites.
Will Smitherman (40) and Harry Collier (36) were the only top order Portsmouth batsmen to make any impression as Peter Lamb (4-20) produced a particularly good spell. Lamb’s victims included wicketkeeper Alex Hammond, who was late on parade having gone to St Helen’s, Southsea instead of Paultons !
But the untimely last wicket stand took Portsmouth’s total to 227-9 and, with Paultons losing wickets all too regularly, too many to chase.
Chris Hall (23), John Robinson (28) and Nathan Feltham (30) all made starts, but Dawson (3-21), bowling his left-arm seam, removed three of the first five to leave the hosts struggling at 129-7.
Tony Richman (44), arguably batting too low at eight, produced a late rally, but with Jed Whitecross (3-47) returning Paultons’ challenge ended at 187.
Hampshire all-rounder Chris Wood once again played the lead role as Old Tauntonians & Romsey strengthened their Division 2 promotion claims with a five-wicket win over Fawley.
Wood took a mean 3-14 off ten overs as Fawley slithered from 97-2 to 148 all out, with Jody Brown ripping out the middle-order and tail to finish with 5-23.
Wood, whose victims included top order pair Tom Gates (38) and Paul Marks (22), then picked up the bat and cracked 68 not out to win the match.
George Marshall (pictured left) got his cricket gear down from the loft, blew off the dust – and then led Hambledon to a vital two-wicket win over Tichborne Park at Ridge Meadow.
A Premier Division 2 batting award winner in 2011, when he made 881 runs for United Services, Marshall hadn’t played cricket for several seasons.
But his forceful 62 at the top of the order played a key part as relegation threatened Dons successfully chased down Tichborne’s 195.
Tom Allam (82) was largely responsible for Tichborne’s total – one Hambledon looked set to cruise past when Rob Atkins (35) and Shane Nkomo (45) took their reply to 163-2.
But a massive collapse, initiated by Allam (4-35) and Doug Butler (3-36), saw Hambledon lose six wickets for 26 runs before Kevin Shinn’s 17 not out got them across the line.
Stuart Tognarelli and New Zealander Kyle Ruffell led the way as Sparsholt enjoyed a comfortable 84-run win over SPL3 cellar dwellers Langley Manor at Knellers Lane.
The Winchester hockey ace hit 87 and shared a handy stand with teenager Tom Foster (53) celebrated his maiden league fifty.
