Fair Oak’s proud unbeaten record in competitive recreational league cricket, stretching back to August 2014, is over.
They had won 20 successive matches in Southern Premier and Hampshire League cricket since Bashley (Rydal) II beat them at the tail end of the 2014 summer.
They won all 16 matches in winning County Division 1 last summer and, since being promoted, had won their opening three Premier Division 3 games. But that winning sequence ended when new table toppers, Basingstoke & North Hants left Lapstone Park with a six-wicket victory under their belts.
Tom Hockenhull (75) and Rhys Oxley (51) eased Oaks to 141-2, but Charlie Gwynne (32) apart, the remainder of the innings caved in against 17-year old Joe Oates, who returned a league best 5-41, and Steve Bucksey (2-40).
Another emerging Bountyman prospect, Brad Neal carried Basingstoke to victory.
Neal hit an unbeaten 90 (three sixes and 11 fours) and enjoyed fruitful partnerships with Callum Coombes (40) and Dean Nurse (29 not out) after Richard Vinn (44) had anchored the innings at the start.
Paul Hawkins hit 104 as St Cross Symondians II’s 216 (Kevin Neave 30) proved beyond reach of Hursley Park, who find themselves bottom of the table after suffering an 81-run defeat at The Quarters.
Zimbabwean Boswell Chapungu (44) propped up Hursley’s tame 135 response.
Kiwi Mike Ruffell (77) and Lee Harrop (66) shared an unbroken century stand as visiting Gosport Borough overhauled Waterlooville’s 178 (Alex Shephard 57). The New Zealander cracked 11 fours in his unbeaten knock.
