The Southern Electric Premier Division 3 championship race has taken a dramatic turn in favour of South Wilts’.
As the Salisbury club’s first team heads towards a record breaking fourth successive Premier Division title, so the second side heads Division 3.
A 25-run win at Trojans, which coincided with Waterlooville losing a third match in four weeks, has given South Wilts II a 16-point lead at the top.
Everything could now hinge on Waterlooville’s visit to Bemerton on Saturday, 1pm. It's a match Ville - Plate t20 finalists against Ventnor at Totton & Eling on Sunday (3pm) - must win.
A South Wilts win would make Tom Pearce’s side hot favourites for the title.
Half-centuries by Joe Cranch (57) and Steve Booth (56) pointed South Wilts to a handsome 276-8 at Stoneham Lane.
Trojans replied with a creditable 251-9 – spin pair Paul Draper and Rob Pittman shared six of the wickets – but were beaten by 25 runs.
Waterlooville crashed to a 121-run win against St Cross Symondians II, who made 237-6 (Robbie Hadfield 61) before a five-wicket spell by Alan Whitman (5-20) helped bowl the host out for 116.
A century by Tom Atkins (121), who shared a near double-century partnership with Oli Kelly (81), enabled Lymington to pile up a massive 334-6 at May’s Bounty.
Oli Kelly and Ed Freeman then took three wickets apiece as Basingstoke were dismissed for 241 – the 93-run win effectively ending Lymington’s relegation troubles.
But bottom side Alton II inflicted a surprise nine-run win over Gosport Borough – a win which may be too little too late to avoid a Hampshire League return.
Peter Hayward racked up a career-best 136 as Havant II hit 345-7 (Simon Loat 78) before dismissing Totton & Eling II for 165.
