Havant will get the opportunity to have Hampshire’s South African teenager Brad Wheal spearheading their attack in the ECB Southern Electric Premier Division visit to Alton.
The 18-year old has only made one Havant appearance so far - taking two wickets in the win over Ventnor a fortnight ago – and this week celebrated his County Championship debut by dismissing Middlesex opener Sam Robson, who was playing for England 12 months ago.
With Hampshire off-duty in terms of county cricket until they play Worcestershire next weekend, Wheal is set to play for Havant at the Jubilee Ground.
Alton leg-spin all-rounder Jack Myers, meanwhile, will join injured Kiwi all-rounder Dewayne Bowden on the sidelines. Myers is out with a rib injury, putting extra emphasis on the in-form Julian Ballinger to increase his early season wicket tally.
Alton: Hammond, Penn, Paul, Myers, Heffernan, Janmohammed, Gadsby, Mortimer, Salmon, Ballinger, Ball.
Havant: Ransley, Hopson, Walker, Morgan, Hindley, Stone, Hovey, Bulled, Prentice, Wheal, Matthews, Ord.
Premier Division cricket comes to Sarisbury Athletic’s Allotment Road ground – four weeks later than scheduled.
Last year’s Division 1 champions had to play their opening two ‘home’ games at Hursley Park and on the Ageas Bowl Nursery Ground after drainage contractors spread sand over the outfield at the pavilion end.
A healthy covering of grass is now sprouting through the problem part of the outfield, allowing last weekend’s scheduled Hampshire League visit by Ropley to go ahead.
Sarisbury surrendered their unbeaten start when Lymington beat them by 22 runs last weekend.
Left arm seamer Dan Goldstraw, who one shy of a 450-wicket haul in Premier League cricket, misses Ventnor’s visit, but Matt Journeaux is back.
Ventnor will be captained by Neil Westhorpe in the absence of Mark Holmes and give a Premier Division debut to Portsmouth Grammar School spin all-rounder Jadon Buckeridge.
Sarisbury Athletic: Banks, Rawlins, Norris, Covey, Burl, Geyle, Jack Lovett, Joe Lovett, Journeaux, Miller, Jewell.
Ventnor: Westhorpe, Snell, Herridge, Eysele, S Willis, H Calloway, R Whyte, Buckeridge, Corbin, Wilson, Cheek.
St Cross Symondians’ dramatic and shock ‘last ball six’ victory over Havant last week has ensured there will be no complacency in the South Wilts dressing room prior to the Premier Division match at Bemerton.
“What happened at Havant hasn’t gone unnoticed, so we’ll be on our guard and focussed from ball one,” warned Tom Morton, whose side is chasing a fourth successive Premier title.
“It just goes to underline that any side can beat another in this league and, glancing at their line-up at Havant, St Cross look a far stronger unit now.”
South Wilts will be boosted by Sean Terry’s return against Symondians – the county opener has been sidelined by a bout of tonsillitis – and that of off-spinner Rob Franklin, who missed his first game in three years last week.
South Wilts have won all three games so far and enjoy a seven-point lead at the top of the log.
South Wilts: Morton, Abel, Terry, Hayward, Riddle, Cranch, Hibberd, Duffield, Foley, Warner, Booth, Franklin.
Hampshire’s Joe Gatting will be the prize scalp when the county’s Academy side pitches up for Premier League action at Burridge.
Equally, the former Sussex batsman will want to make a big score and get one over on county team-mates Tom Barber (the accomplished hospital radio broadcaster) and Brad Taylor. The Academy are without leg spinner Mason Crane and Josh McCoy, so youngsters Ben Caldera and Felix Organ get the call.
Burridge: Gatting, Collings-Wells, Richards, Savident, Kenway, Dods, Ankers, Hewitt, Stancliffe, Jackson, McMurray.
Academy: Weatherley, Duggan, Alsop, Gorvin, Goodwin, Taylor, Organ, Caldera, Evans, Murray, Barber.
