Skipper Richard Taylor will be curious to know which St Cross Symondians turns up for the seventh round of ECB Southern Electric Premier Division matches against Burridge at the Green Jackets Ground.
Will it be the one that ran South Wilts so close, the side that rattled up a ground record 329-4 against Sarisbury Athletic or the one that capitulated before lunch at Bashley (Rydal) last week ?
Seven days ago they etched themselves an unwanted entry in the ECB Southern Electric Premier Division annals – by becoming only the second team (after Liphook & Ripsley v BAT Sports in 2002) to be bowled out before lunch in an all-day ‘time’ pennant match !
They were dismissed for a paltry 84 some 20 minutes before lunch was dished up at the Bashley, who waltzed to an easy eight-wicket win long before Frankie Dettori had ridden Golden Horn to Epsom derby success.
Two famous cricketing names – Lilley and Thomson, albeit with a slight variation of surname spelling in Jake’s case – shared the bowling plaudits with six Symondians wickets each.
Lilley (3-20) and the evergreen Kevin Nash (2-16) wrecked the St Cross top order – the first five wickets falling for 30 runs as the visitors batted recklessly after being inserted on a low bouncing BCG track.
Tom Foyle lashed a six and three fours in a breezy 20, but the next five St Cross batsmen mustered a meagre ten runs between them.
Dorset off-spinner Thomson (3-15) and South Australian prospect Tom Andrews (2-29) had begun to make an impact as St Cross sank to 45-7 – an innings in total contrast to their 329-7 against Sarisbury Athletic seven days earlier.
Aided by Harry Foyle (14) and Robbie Hadfield (15), Richard Taylor (23) managed to double the St Cross score to 84 before Thomson ended the innings in the 26th over.
Although Bashley lost a couple of wickets – Dan Friedman (20) and last week’s centurion Michael Porter for a duck, Luke Webb (34) and Richard Morris (28) remained undefeated as they cruised to victory at 85-2.
A third successive victory under the watch of new skipper Simon Watkins, which followed back-to-back defeats, saw Bashley (Rydal) climb to third place in the Premier Division table.
