St Cross Symondians halted a four-match losing run with a five-wicket victory at Newclose which may spell the end of Ventnor’s stay at the top table of local Premier League cricket.
The winless islanders had to beat out-of-sorts St Cross but this defeat, couple with the Hampshire Academy’s shock win over South Wilts, has effectively left them 40 points adrift at the bottom.
Any prospect they had of winning had virtually disappeared by lunch, by which time Ventnor had nose dived to 67-6 (James Cheek 35) against James Marsh (3-35) and Richard Taylor (3-39).
A maiden SPL half-century by Toby Corbin (65) helped Ventnor recover to 173 (Mark Holmes 29).
St Cross lost five wickets getting the runs, but Dan Young (57), Tom Foyle (43 not out) and Charlie Ayres (33) got them comfortably across the line.
