Teenage run gun Ben Duggan notched his third century of the season and took his personal tally past the 500 mark as the Hampshire Academy swept to a seven-wicket victory over Sarisbury Athletic on the Ageas Bowl Nursery Ground.
The Cowes-based left-hander had bagged ducks in his previous two knocks against South Wilts and St Cross Symondians, but made up for lost time, scoring an unbeaten 116 as the Academy youngsters comfortably chased down Sarisbury’s 249 all out.
Duggan, 17, struck 16 boundaries and shared a significant second-wicket partnership with Jake Goodwin, who was within four runs of his maiden Premier Division century when, on 96, he was trapped leg before.
Had he made treble figures, it would have been Goodwin’s second consecutive century – the Swindon teen having hit 138 for Hampshire Under-17s against Gloucestershire last week.
Academy manager Bobby Parks lavished praise on the teenager pair, whose 177-run stand set up an easy win.
“Ben batted beautifully again. Just played everything on its merits and built his innings with some style,” he said.
“Jake concentrated hard – two sixes and 15 fours in his knock – but just needs to be a little more patient at the crease and just the time at his disposal.
“It was a shame he didn’t make a century, but he’s in a good run of form and it won’t be long coming.”
Earlier, Sarisbury lost both openers cheaply, but rebuilt their innings either side of lunch through Basil Akram (61) and Dave Banks (63).
Ryan Burl (42) took the total past the 200-mark, but long before then the Academy had their slow bowlers operating – Mason Crane, still buzzing from his successful T20 blast debut against Surrey the previous evening, bagging the key scalp of Akram before eking his way through the lower order with a 4-59 return.
Mark Miller (29) and Jack Lovett (21) added late runs before falling to the Felix Organ (2-31) and Tom Alsop combination.
Alsop didn’t need to bat, but picked up four victims behind the stumps.
Sarisbury’s 249 was well below par and, even though Joe Weatherley went cheaply, the Academy were home and dry inside 48 overs.
