David 'Butch' White, the former Hampshire and England fast bowler, took a staggering 51 wickets and was the main thrust towards NEW MILTON becoming the inaugural Hampshire League champions in 1973.
There were no bowling limitations in those embryo days and White took full advantage by sending down 186 overs in New Milton's 13 unbeaten matches, 64 of which were maidens. Paul Broomfield and Pete Watts picked up the crumbs off White plate and took 36 of the other wickets to fall. Bill Paramore (447), John Wolfe (287) and Tony Wharton, with an enterprising 249-run haul, scored the bulk of the runs.
The late John Wallace, whose 509-run aggregate included the only CD1 century (125*) of the season, was the leading overall run scorer, while Keith Darnton made 437 for Follands. Teammate Mike Turner picked up 44 wickets, three more than Richard McIlwaine (who made four County Championship appearances for Hampshire) with 41. There were only 14 teams in each division in those days, the HL containing two county divisions (Lymington won CD2) and four regionals won by Alton Town, Crofton, Kingsclere, and Old Portmuthians, respectively.
