This time, it was Newport — last year’s Island champions — who caused an upset against the Southern Premier League Division 2 outfit, seven days after Ventnor were beaten by County Division 2 side Ryde, who remain unbeaten in the All Wight League.
Ventnor batted first at Steephill, with 14-year old Oscar Vandecasteele (30) and Martin Blackman (26) after which Ben Attrill (34), Ross Whyte (27 not out) and Rob Snell (19) all pitched in, with Newport bowler Aaron Hartup taking 3-35.
Newport hunted down Ventnor’s 167-7 with an over to spare – the SPL club reflecting on the 33 runs they conceded in extras. Charlie Calloway (3-23) was the pick of the home bowlers. Newport won by three wickets and lie second in the six-team log behind Ryde.
