Shanklin & Godshill are refurbishing the pavilion and clubhouse at their Westhill ground as a lasting memorial to club stalwart Dave Porter, who died suddenly while on holiday in Tenerife in January.
The first phase of the work, which involves the renovation of the showers and toilets, will be completed ahead of Shanklin’s new found entry into Hampshire League, County Division 2 cricket following this season’s promotion as County Division 3 South runners-up.
Shanklin are already well on course to raise approximately £20,000 to carry out the work – with £15,000 already pledged in donations, or ‘in-kind’ for materials or work commitment costs. The club still needs approximately £5,000 to cover the remaining project costs.
Brother Brian Porter said: “It had been Dave’s and my intention to refurbish the Gents Toilets for the club last winter and so, despite Dave no longer being with us, I was determined to carry on with the project in his memory. I have been emotionally humbled by the generous support I have received so far from family, friends and so many of Dave’s business colleagues, who have either offered to do the labour work ‘in-kind’ – or offered very generous discounts on materials needed.
                                                                             Special friend and person
“They have shown how special my brother Dave was, not only to his family, but to so many people on the Island’‘
‘I hope the project can be completed at no cost to the cricket club – a memorial to Dave, funded by the many people who regarded him as a very special friend and person.
“I am encouraging both club members of Shanklin & Godshill, and Dave’s many friends in Island cricket and in his wider business circle to support the memorial work.
"We've had one guy 81-years young coming along every day, besides others lending a hand, but we do need a carpenter."
Dave Porter was a true legend of Shanklin cricket, scoring some 30,000 runs during his long and successful association with Westhill, which he regarded as his second home.
