Hampshire Academy pair Fletcha Middleton and Tom Prest emerged victorious in the England Lions South/North Under-19 trial at Loughborough, where 22 wickets fell on day one.
Sussex YCs Jamie Atkins (5-35) and Surrey left-armer Sean Hunt (3-13) ran amok as the North were dismissed for 126. But wickets continued to fall, with Prest (15) and skipper Middleton (4) dismissed with the South 76-6 before Middlesex prospect Ben Cullen hit 70 to lift their score to 213.
The North posted 342-9 in the second innings, but a patient 52 by Middleton and 44 from Prest helped the South chase down a 255-run target to win by three wickets.
The Academy pair hope to play in the follow-up 50-over matches against the North at Loughborough next weekend.
