Ben Rolfs led the way with a near innings-long 61 as Alton confirmed their highest ever ECB Southern Premier Division standing with a narrow two-wicket win over the Hampshire Academy at the Jubilee Ground.
The young Australian, who is scheduled to make an autumn return to his native Melbourne after a locally based two-year working stay, was the the crease after just nine deliveries as Alton, chasing 158, wobbled at 8-2. He was still there with Alton 152-8, just seven runs short. One big six-hit by Bash Walters settled it.
Rolfs, who has made just shy of 600 SPL runs this season including two hundreds, hit only four boundaries but glued the Brewers innings together as Alton lost wickets every 20 runs or so, three to Oli Williams (3-34), who shone for the Academy upon his return from a finger fracture.
Back from a T20 tournament in Canada, Finn Gordon (51) held the Academy together after Walters (2-20) stuck a double blow with the new balls.
Apart from when he was partnered by Sam Ashman (23) at 72-2, there were no meaningful partnerships and the Academy were 109-6 when Williams made his 37.
