Scott Myers hit a century as Alton recovered from a horror start to beat promoted ECB Southern Premier Division rivals Sarisbury Athletic by 51 runs at Allotment Road.
The Brewers captain could hardly have envisaged a more bizarre and dramatic start as Sarisbury seamer Josh Williams removed Alton teens Alex Corbett and Oly Boulton with the first two balls of the match.
Myers was still strapping on his pads when Boulton was bowled and had barely got himself in at the crease when Connor Clarke struck with the 11th ball of the match, having Sam Ruffell caught. Alton 4-3.
A remarkable turnaround saw Alton recover and make 284-8 – Myers scoring his first SPL hundred in five years (Rowledge, July 2022) and adding 181 for the fourth wicket with another youngster Harry Bater (69), who has joined the Brewers from Fleet.
Myers departed for 100 (eight fours and three sixes) allowing George Egleston (50 off 37 balls) and Bash Walters (37 off 25) to make merry with a quick-fire stand of 80.
Williams (5-63) and Clarke (3-56) took the eight Alton wickets before Sarisbury made a positive 77-run start.
Joe Baker, late of Totton & Eling, made 46 and Zimbabwe youngster Nathaniel Hlabangama 36 before in-form Jack Robson and Williams (21) advanced the score to 173-3.
But plucky Alton found the asking rate too and lost their last seven wickets for 50 runs, Robson being last man out for 77 and Egleston finishing with 3-50.
