Andover took generosity to the extremes by gifting Calmore Sports 44 extras – and then losing their Southern Premier League Division 1 match at Loperwood Park by 41 runs.
Among those 44 sundries were 31 wides – Andrew Duckworth sending down 18 of them – giving Calmore extra overs to build a match winning score of 191-8. Andover, struggling at 43-4, were dismissed for 150.
Calmore began confidently through Darren Vann (31), but when the impressive Luke Graham (3-13) caused 59-0 to become 66-3, it was time for repairs.
James Manning (23) and Mark Lavelle (23) added 64 to lift the hosts to 130 before they were parted.
While Andover maintained their extras giveaways, Matt Hooper (5-46) got wickets, reducing Calmore to 148-7 before Mike West (25) and Liam Newton (19) launched a late assault to take the defending SPL1 champions to 191-8.
Lavelle (4-23) got himself into the attack early as Andover lurched at 43-4.
Josh Ballentine-Dykes (41) and Rob Liney (21) lifted spirits, but the early damage was never repaired and two wickets each by Manning and West ended Andover’s resistance at 150.
The 41-run win enabled Calmore to keep tracks with Bournemouth and Sarisbury Athletic at the top.
Hook and Newnham Basics ended a five-match losing sequence, returning to winning ways as they beat visiting Liphook and Ripsley by 88 runs at the KGV.
Hook turned in a solid batting display, as nearly every player made it into double figures.
Jordan Hobday top scored with 60 from 42 balls, which included eight fours and one six.
Openers Jack Robson (34) and Richard Willcock provided a sound start, while Matt Love and Alex Brown were both caught after scoring 26, and Matt Buckingham made 23.
The ninth wicket pair Rupert Armstrong (13 not out) and Anik Divecha (12) added valuable late runs as Hook finished on 242.
Liphook, who visit North Perrott in the Village Cup quarter-finals this Sunday, got off to a flying start as openers Ryan Covey (58) and Sam Franks (10) put on 50 in the opening nine overs.
Hook needed a breakthrough and first change bowler Willcock provided it as he had Franks caught by Hobday.
However, Liphook continued to look on top, thanks to Covey and Harry Munt (12), before an inspired double bowling change turned the game on its head.
Rhodes Franklin in his first over, bowled top scorer Covey and then Divecha did likewise removing Munt making it 88-3.
Franklin (4-32) and Divecha (2-17) then set about taking out most of the middle order, as the visitors soon found themselves 124-7.
Rob Nicklin (25) and Sean Burton (18 not out) were Liphook’s last hope, when they were parted thanks to another Hobday catch, off the bowling of Harry Warner (3-17), who finished off the job at 154 all out.
