Ventnor have signed Barbados left-hand opening batsman Anthony Alleyne in a player/coach capacity in a bid to halt their slide down the Southern Premier League pyramid.
The 26-year old, who has played more than 30 first class matches for Barbados, will look to regalvanise a Ventnor side that lost its ECB Premier Division status in 2016 and was beaten in all 17 league matches last summer.
"As an ECB Level 2 qualified coach, Anthony will play a lead coaching role at both senior and junior level within the club and play a full part in our activities both on and off the field," explained Ventnor chairman Roy George.
Predominantly a red-ball player, Anthony represented the West Indies in the 2012 ICC Under-19 World Cup and is now a regular for Barbados, his correct, patient style having allowed him to established himself in the top-order in 4-day cricket.
Following a strong 2016/17 (587 runs at 34.53), he become a permanent fixture against the new ball. He has so far compiled over 1,360 run in West Indian cricket, with a career best 186 against Trinidad & Tobago.
Educated at Dulwich College in South London, Alleyne played alongside England opener Dominic Sibley for Surrey Under-17s before returning to his native Barbados and seal a place in the West Indies Under-19 World Cup squad.
He has spent four of the past five summers in England, playing for Walton-on-Thames in 2015 and 2016, for Brentwood in the ECB Essex Premier League in 2017 and Devon League runners-up Paignton last season.
Alleyne, who will arrive on the island shortly after Easter, scored three centuries in his final four matches for Paignton, helping the club to second place in the log.
Ventnor, who host Fair Oak in their Division 2 opener at Steephill on May 2, will shortly be announcing a new captain for the upcoming season.
