Relegated Waterlooville’s losing Southern Premier League streak continued with a home defeat to neighbours Havant.
Despite a late order fightback at Rowlands Avenue, they suffered a 19-run loss – their 12th second tier reverse in 15 completed fixtures.
Ville started well, ex-Havant youngster Matty Hayward removing Aussie Kieran Abrams and Chris Stone as Havant dipped to 46-3. Crete bound Abrams was hoping the derby would be a passport to much needed runs, alas he forgot to take it with him. Cue panic at 0215 hours in Fareham ...
Rob Woolley hit 60 at the top of the order, but Havant were 119-5 when Ray Reynolds (2-29) trapped Richard Hindley (7) leg before.
The visitors were indebted to teen Harrison Barnard, whose unbeaten 63 was a new SPL best, for getting them up to 227-6. First he added 52 for the sixth wicket with skipper Chris Morgan (33), before an unbroken partnership of 56 for the seventh with Pete Hopson. Barnard is to winter with Bayswater Morley in Western Australia.
Hopson, a regular SPL top flight opener, came in at No 8 to end undefeated on 33.
Ville looked on course for a rare win when they reached 124-2, with Luke Anderson (44) and Dan Birch (34) having added 76 for the third wicket. But they both fell within a run of each other – Morgan (2-37) removing both – and before Ville knew it they were 136-7.
Chris Stone, the seventh bowler Morgan turned to, dismissed Hayward (17) – who was caught by his dad, Peter – and Alex Cordery.
Ville refused to go under, with Ashan Silva and Dylan Youngs (24) adding 35 for the eighth wicket.
Silva put on a further 32 for the ninth before he was bowled by Stone (3-21) for 40. There were only two balls remaining when the final Ville wicket fell, Joseph Mitchell bowled by Aron Tubman. The News.
