Calmore Sports open their defence of the Voneus Village Cup against Hambledon at Loperwood Park on Sunday (12.30), but whether their influential captain Mark Lavelle will be there in time for the toss is anyone’s guess !
Lavelle, who led Calmore to a historic victory at Lord’s last September, is dashing back from his Stag-do in Budapest, with his inbound Ryanair flight not due to touch down at Bournemouth international airport until ten o’clock.
“Fingers crossed the flight will be on time, but whatever it’s going to be a frantic 30-minute trip up the A31 to Calmore, with barely time to eat my bowl of Frosties and be ready for midday,” Lavelle laughed.
Calmore know they’ll have their work cut out against a Hambledon side still bubbling from last summer’s Southern Premier Division 3 title triumph, when they won all but one of their matches.
The Dons are at full strength, with one-time Hampshire left-arm spinner Ian Turner included to tie up one end for eight overs.
Calmore Sports: Lavelle, Brewster, Johns, Bound, Johnson, Bailey, Manning, Taylor, Perry, Wright, Carty.
Hambledon: Le Clerq, McGovern, G Marshall, Glanfield, Pratt, J Marshall, Restell, Harding, Oliver, Turner, Khan.
Having Jeremy Frith back at the top of the order - in addition to bowling his off-spin – will be an enormous boost for Sparsholt, who host Hampshire League Division 3 North side Overton at the Norman Edwards Ground.
Frith, a frequent Southern Premier League award winner, didn’t play at all during the covid plagued 2020 season and, once transport links to the Channel Island were restored, turned out only four times last summer.
Sparsholt: Banks, Frith, Sumner, Berrill, May, Collinson, Doran, Ley, J Williams, O Williams, Proctor.
Near neighbours Hursley Park are unable to piece together 11 players for the visit to Ventnor, who get a bye.
Hook & Newnham Basics willy be looking to build on last weekend’s 51-run victory over Fareham & Crofton when they host Locks Heath at the KGV.i
Spin all-rounder Charlie Neville, who shone at Bath Lane, with 41 runs and three wickets, expects to play a key role again.
Hook & Newnham Basics II: Light, Love, Warner, T May, Bruin, Neville, Balcombe, Gardner, Armstrong, O May, Shore.
Sarisbury Athletic chairman Jon Floyd has been in a confused state this week as he’s never been quite sure what his club’s Village Cup plans actually were !
When the original draw was published, Sarisbury weren’t in the competition, even though they had entered !
That problem overcome, Sarisbury were allocated an away tie at Amport, near Andover, but it appears they didn’t enter. So, third time lucky, Sarisbury are off to Oakley’s delightful ground on the outskirts of Basingstoke.
Sarisbury Athletic: J Hill, Rawlins, Floyd, S Hill, Bradley, Lovett, Reeves, Wright, Jewell, Sanders, Smith.
Rowledge are long overdue a run in the Village Cup and will be optimistic about their prospects of beating Chertsey-based Surrey League Premier Division outfit Ottershaw at Church Road.
Rowledge have two of their youngsters away at Durham University, but field not far off their full strength SPL1 side.
Rowledge: J Wish, O Ryman, Baker, R Yates, Seeborn, Lloyd, Littlewood, Whitney, B Wish, Chilcott, Forbes.
Sunday‘s fixtures: Bramshaw v Paultons, Easton & Martyr Worthy v Tichborne Park, Hook & Newnham Basics II v Locks Heath, Liphook & Ripsley v Elsted, Oakley v Sarisbury Athletic, Redlynch & Hale v Winsley, Rowledge v Ottershaw, Shrewton v Lacock, Sparsholt v Overton.
