Several hours before England’s agonising penalty shoot-out loss to Italy in the European Championship final, Ynystawe and Clipstone & Bilsthorpe suffered a similar fate in the last 16 of the Voneus Village Cup.
Following the abandonment of their round six fixtures on July 4, Ynystawe and Clipstone returned to their home grounds a week later to host the rearranged matches, taking on Gloucestershire’s Rockhampton and Dyfed’s Neyland, respectively.
However, with rain disrupting both matches once again, the captains agreed to stage a bowl-off and unfortunately for Ynystawe and Clipstone, the result didn’t go their way.
Rockhampton triumphed 1-0 in South Wales, Jamie Wakefield the only player to hit the stumps, while Neyland were on target four times to seal a 4-1 win over Clipstone.
Ynystawe, who lifted the Village Cup title in 2001, had the right to feel aggrieved at the weather.
Momentum
Having been put into bat by Rockhampton, the Welsh side raced to 115 without loss after 23 overs, with captain Tom Blake and opening partner Morgan Hodges both posting half-centuries.
Blake was removed for 57 with the first ball of the 24th over, caught by Will Tyler off the bowling of Dave McCabe, but it did little to halt Ynystawe’s momentum, with wicketkeeper Hodges continuing his charge.
Carl Roberts and Matthew Blake departed for four and 10, respectively, before Thomas Morgan, entered the fray and put on an unbeaten 36-run fourth-wicket stand with Hodges which could only be halted by the weather.
Ynystawe’s innings ended prematurely in the 38th over with the scoreboard 201 for 3, Morgan motoring on 19 not out from 13 balls, and Hodges stranded on an unbeaten 99 from 103 balls, including 11 fours and three sixes.
McCabe, Chris Willoughby and Jamie Wakefield were the wicket-takers for Rockhampton and it was the latter who earned hero status in the bowl-off as the only player on either side to hit the stumps.
Rockhampton will travel tomorrow (Sunday) to Southern Premier League Division 1 promotion contenders Calmore Sports, who previously won their tied match with Goatacre on fewest number of wickets lost, for their quarter-final clash.
