Calmore Sports beat Basingstoke & North Hants by 17 runs at Loperwood Park in their last competitive match before they face Alvanley in the Voneus Village Cup final at Lord’s on Sunday week, September 19.
They successfully defended 174 and, in dismissing Basingstoke for 156, secured third position in Southern Premier Division 1 behind close neighbours Totton & Eling and New Milton, who snatched runners-up after beating the newly crowned champions.
Calmore’s total was built around Ben Johns (42) and Shawn Johnson (42), who eased the hosts to 82-2 before the middle-order subsided and Greg Donaldson (4-28) cashed in as the last four wickets fell for two runs.
At 94-3 and with Ash Neal (40) and Joe Oates (42) comfortably placed, Basingstoke appeared in a promising position. But they also lost direction and, after James Manning had taken 4-29, fell away to 157 all out.
Calmore’s Lord’s opponents Alvanley played – and won – their first match since mid-August when they beat relegated Stockport by 100 runs to remain third in Cheshire County Division 2.
Based near Runcorn, Alvanley play their final league match of the season against lowly Hale Barns on Saturday, while Calmore have arranged a full-scale 40-over match against newly crowned SPL2 champions Liphook & Ripsley at Ripsley Park.
New Milton’s recent ploy of dropping Toby Edwards down into the middle-order where can face an older ball continued to pay dividends when Totton & Eling visited Fernhill.
Despite the efforts of the Beck brothers, Ryan (31) and Lee (41), New Milton were in a spot of bother at 91-5 (Brighton Mugochi 3-23) when Edwards (46) joined George Watts in a partnership which yielded 45 runs off 31 balls, including five fours and four sixes.  The Green & Golds were still up against it at 138-8 (Sam Beer 3-29), but the tail wagged and Totton were asked to chase 173.
They set off at speed, with Tom Cheater (43) and Harry Stephens putting together a 63-run start, which weakened at 78-4 and eventually subsided to 133al all out.
