Bournemouth, who set the pace until the mid-point of the season, finished a creditable third in the ECB Southern Premier Division, despite suffering a hefty 108-run defeat by Havant, who will be disappointed to have ended their campaign once again in the bottom half of the table, albeit sixth compared with seven in 2019.
Havant’s win owed much to a skipper Chris Morgan (68), who shared important partnerships, 77 with Peter Hopson (46) then 108 with Harry Gadd (69) before the hosts lost their way – and their wickets – from 188-2 to 214-8 (six wickets falling for 26 runs) as Dan Conway (4-24) and left-arm spinner Robbie Pack (3-46) made inroads.
Jez Bulled, so often reliable in the middle-order, made an important 23 not out to steer Havant to 251-9.
Prime wicket takers Conway (25) and Pack (29) have been Bournemouth’s most successful bowlers all summer long, while the lions’ batting has been flaky all season.
Richard Jerry (4-32) effectively ended the Havant Park finale as a contest with three early strikes as Bournemouth subsided to 21-4. He came back later for a second spell and picked up another wicket, the including the well set Pack, with an absolute beauty to finish the season with 30 scalps.
Luke Webb (23), who fell to the miserly Morgan (2-16) and latterly Ed Denham (26) were the only players to offer much support to Pack as Bournemouth slipped to 145 all out.
Finishing third after such a good start will have been disappointing to some in the Chapel Gate camp, but skipper Chris Park will be satisfied. In 2019, their first season back in the Premier Division after a lengthy wait, they finished ninth, in second from bottom place.
