MIKE ADAMS, PRESIDENT, ST CROSS SYMONDIANS

1/5/2026

Tributes have been paid to St Cross Symondians cricket president Mike Adams, who passed away recently after a long and courageous battle with Parkinsons.
Over 200 club members, friends and family attended a remembrance for Mike, with some travelling hundreds of miles to the club's Green Jackets ground on the outskirts of Winchester, showing the depth of affection in which Mike was held.
In a moving tribute, club captain Matt Perry-Lewis said that St Cross wouldn’t be enjoying the firm footing it now has, without all the love and effort that Mike had put in over the years.
He recalled: "Mike and wife Jenny’s involvement started when their three boys starting to playing for the club within the junior section. They then moved into the senior section and represented
the 1st team, with Jimmy progressing a great deal further by playing and going on to captain Hampshire for four years.
Mike Adams was chairman at St Cross from 2007-2012 and then president from 2017. He worked tirelessly with others on the club committee to both promote the club, as well as help with fund raising to provide the club greater security.
"Again, without the hard work from so many, including Mike, the club wouldn’t have progressed in the way it has," Perry-Lewis continued.
"His famous committee meetings always involved healthy debate as well as structured conversation on how the club's future and stability could be bettered.
"Mike was an ideas man and he always offered plenty of opinion - as well as some offbeat suggestions - on how we could improve things. Those ideas required following through and Mike’s connections and
network would be tapped into to help with that.
"For years, he would know who to get to help him and decisions were always made with St Cross at the forefront. His great mate Jigger Jenkins made a great ally and they both achieved a huge amount off the pitch while also enjoying watching their boys play.
"Latterly as President, Mike would love to watch the St Cross teams on a Saturday as well as his grandchildren playing. He could be seen with a beer in his hand, and he was and he was always a huge supporter of the club and it’s progression.
Appropriately, the main ground at St Cross has been named after Mike. Testament to all his hard work.
"It has been an honour to call Mike Adams a good friend and we all miss him greatly," Perry-Lewis concluded.

New Milton have been handed a significant boost ahead of the new Southern Premier and Hampshire League season after receiving a major equipment donation from local philanthropist and Bransgore councillor Richard Frampton.
Frampton, a strong supporter of grassroots and community sport, has gifted the club a Kubota tractor along with two specialist grounds maintenance machines – a Sisis Quadraplay and a Sisis Slitter – to support the upkeep of the club’s ground off Fernhill Lane.
The donation will significantly enhance the club’s ability to maintain playing surfaces for both senior and junior cricket, helping ensure better pitch and outfield conditions throughout the season.

BASHLEY PLAN TO BOUNCE BACK AFTER WINTER LOSSES

Picture
Michael Porter [James Robinson]
Bashley (Rydal) are determined to bounce back after a raft of winter departures left them with a depleted squad ahead of Saturday's white ball ECB Southern Premier Division derby with New Forest neighbours Lymington at the BCG, 11am.
Skipper Michael Porter spent an agonising winter in Australia as news filtered through of the Gordon brothers, Finn (Guildford) and Jacob (Bishop's Stortford) passing through the Bash exit gate, alongside Will Tripcony to WEPL outfit Burbage & Easton Royal and all-rounder Dan Goodey returning to play in his old Devon haunts.  James Trodd made a fifth departure by re-joining OTs & Romsey.
Porter continues as first team captain after initially stepping down at the end of 2025. Following a spell in Melbourne playing and reflecting on his future in the role, Porter has opted to remain at the helm, providing continuity for the top side.
Bashley's impressive win over Bournemouth at Chapel Gate has boosted confidence, particularly with Porter himself scoring 91 and batsman/keeper Patrick Lewis celebrating his return to the first team with an elegant 70 odd.
Army seamer Alvin Cameron will strengthen the bowling attack, with Zack Basey returning from a stint with the Hampshire Academy.
"Ben Walker will be available on a regular basis, which will be an enormous boost," Porter says.
Gareth Berg continues as Lymington captain, eager to continue the club's upward Premier League climb. Mo Abbas has joined champions St Cross Symondians.
Bashley (Rydal): Walker, Achakzai, Stearman, Porter, Lewis, McMurray, Wilson, Basey, Prichard, Read, Cameron.
Lymington: Gareth Berg, Terry Crabb, Dom Hand, Karanveer Kooner, Charlie Wilson, Josh Royan, Ron Patel, Chay Howell, Guy Layman, Thor Howell, Asad Abbas.

"EXCITEMENT IN BOURNEMOUTH GROUP" : CAPTAIN ROBBO

30/4/2026

Picture
Tom Robinson [James Robinson]
BOURNEMOUTH get their ECB Southern Premier Division campaign underway when they host promoted Sarisbury Athletic, as the Lions aim to improve on last season’s disappointing ninth-placed finish.
With a new captain in Tom Robinson, a powerful overseas player in Ben Van Der Merwe at the top of the order and a blend of youth and experience, Bournemouth are eyeing a successful campaign.
Reflecting on last season and looking at the upcoming campaign, new skipper Robinson said they are aiming to make the small improvements that could make all the difference.
“I think a lot of games last year we felt like we probably lost by two or three per cent in most weeks,” Robinson said. “So I think it's trying to iron out a few of those issues, and hopefully we can end up on the right side of those results this year.”
The 26-year-old chartered accountant has plenty of experience with the team in the Southern Premier League, and is looking forward to leading the side.
“It’s a massive honour,” he said. “I’ve been at the club for eight or nine years now and been under some great captains and hopefully I'll take a little the best of all of them as we use our young group, which has got a lot of experience in the Southern Prem to take the club forward and do as well as we can.”
On the squad as a whole, Robinson said: “There's a lot of excitement in the group this year about the team.
“We’ve got a couple of new additions, in Jimmy Brehaut (a left-armer from Taunton Deane) and RJ [Jhala], who's moved up from the twos. Also, Will Murray from the uni, and then people like Alfie [Appleby-Ingram], who are a real rising star and one to watch for the future.”
Appleby-Ingram comes into the season in decent nick, following a score of 91 from the top of the order in a friendly defeat to Bashley (Rydal) last weekend.
James Van Gool also impressed with 72, while Cole Rushworth picked up three wickets and Brehaut two, along with one for Josiah Edy.
New overseas player Ben Van Der Merwe scored 16 – but Robinson is hoping for big things from the Western Province star this term.
“Hopefully [he’ll bring] a lot of runs and experience!” he said. “He's an awesome guy to have around the group. He's blended in already and he's fitting in great, so couldn't ask for any more at this point.”
Looking ahead to the visit of Sarisbury this weekend, Robinson knows it will a tough challenge to start the season against a promoted side from Division One.
“They’re new to the league so it'll be a new challenge for us, and I think that the group, we’ve just got to be ready to perform at a high level in our standards, regardless of what comes in Sarisbury’s team,” Robinson said.
Sarisbury have been seriously weakened by Tom Morton's decision to restrict his cricket to MCC and England 40s, the gloves being handed to Zimbabwe U19 opener  Nathan Hiabangana.  Batsman Joe Baker has switched from Totton & Eling, but Ricky Rawlins is missing.
Bournemouth: Alfie Appleby-Ingram, Ben Van Der Merwe, R J Jhala, James Van Gool, Ben Rogers, Tom Robinson, Connor Smith, Cole Rushworth, James Brehaut, Dan Conway, Josiah Edy.
Sarisbury Athletic: Rob Franklin, Nathan Hiabangana, Joe Baker, Jack Robson, Nathan Feltham, Josh Williams, Sam Cooper,  Jordan Wright, Conor Clark, Sam Hill, Salsham Sharma.

PORTSMOUTH SIGNING MAKES AN IMMEDIATE IMPRESSION

30/4/2026

Picture
If first impressions are to be any guide, then Portsmouth have signed a more than adequate replacement for their Bangladesh international Mohammed  Ashraful, who has re-joined his country's coaching set-up after plundering 1,500 ECB Southern Premier League runs in the past two seasons.
The Southsea club has snapped up 31-year old Indian all-rounder Nazim Siddiqui [left], who made an immediate impression last weekend, making 78 against Sarisbury Athletic and an unbeaten 104 in the ECB national club championship win over Windsor & Eton.
The likeable Siddiqui, who hails from Jharkhand on India's east coast, is in all-rounder in every sense. Since making his debut in the 2017/18 Ranji Trophy, he has been a consistent performer in both red and white-ball formats, amassing 2,228 first-class runs, alongside bowling medium-pace and keeping wicket !
He wore the gloves with some aplomb last weekend.
Siddiqui has previously enjoyed two strong seasons with Plymouth in the Devon League (2023–24), scoring 1,048 runs at 36.14 and taking 20 wickets.
His arrival on Southsea seafront complements a powerful Portsmouth batting line-up, with skipper Harry Gadd's only concern the absence of a new ball partner for Joe Kooner-Evans.  Expect plenty of spin on what looks a superb St Helen's track.

ECB CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: HAVANT FIGHTBACK TO WIN

Rob Woolley led Havant fightback
Cameron Prentice, back at Havant after a seven-year absence, was the match winner as the local Southern Premier League side pulled off a surprise one-wicket ECB national club championship win over Guildford.
The talented one-time Portsmouth Grammar all-rounder, who has played second team cricket at Wokingham for the past two summers, hit an unbeaten 36 during two late partnerships after Rob Woolley had triggered a Havant fightback against the Surrey Championship club
Responding to Guildford's 205-6, Havant lost their first three batsmen for 11 runs, but Woolley, with a timely 76, galvanised the middle-order and took the reply to 156- 8.
Eight wickets down, Havant were still 50 runs short of victory, but Prentice found an improbable partner in teenage wicketkeeper Thomas Clarke (14), the pair lifting the score to 190 before last man Warren Turner nudged eight singles to get Havant home with three balls to spare.

ECB CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: ST CROSS WIN, OTHERS DON'T ...

Felix Organ
Hampshire's Felix Organ hit an unbeaten 71 to steer St Cross Symondians to a comfortable eight-wicket win over West of England Premier Division outfit Midsomer Norton and into the second phase of the ECB National club championship.
The county spin all-rounder struck four sixes and five boundaries and shared a 70-run stand with Dom Kelly (31) and later Jack Bransgrove (26) as St Cross cruised home with 12 overs to spare.
Symondians' reward is a home tie with Burbage & Easton Royal at the Green Jackets ground on May 10.
Midsomer Norton were dismissed for 144, with Greg McKenzie taking 3-28 and Australian recruit Max Keogh, from the Prahan grade club in Melbourne, returning 2-24 on debut.
With four pre-season matches under their belt, St Cross should be well prepared for their opening ECB Southern Premier League title defence against Burridge on the Mike Adams Field on Saturday, 11am.
James Trodd marked his return to OTs & Romsey with a fiery 90 out of his side's 143 against WEPL big guns Potterne, who won by seven wickets.
Trodd, rejoined from Bashley (Rydal), smashed four maximums and 14 fours in his 60-ball knock.
Potterne included South Wilts raised pair Ben Huntley and Jack Mynott, while Jake Goodwin hit 82 not out.
Waterlooville lost by 38 runs at Normandy (211), where teen left-arm spin prospect Matt Hayward hit 46 and Luke Anderson 46.
South Wilts' interest in the ECB national club championship ended with a 73-run defeat by West of England Premier League giants Bath at North Parade.
They were dismissed for 191 after Bath had posted a formidable 264-7 off 40 overs.
Skipper Ben Draper (46) and teen Matt Falconer (44) top scored for South Wilts, who open their Southern Premier League challenge against the Hampshire Academy at Bemerton on Saturday, 11am.
"Being drawn away at Bath was always going to be a formidable task, but their ground at North Parade is simply superb and facing quality opposition is always worthwhile," Draper reflected
"But we are well prepared going into the league with all the batters and bowlers having enjoyed meaningful practice."
South Wilts easily beat an inexperienced Academy side by 84 runs at Bemerton, Harry Broderick (51) and Tom Cheater (41) helping the hosts to 217-8 before James Degg's 4-31 return helped reduce the Academy to 133 all out.

There will be a distinct Antipodean twang in the Sports Ground clubhouse shortly, with Lymington trawling Down Under and attracting a Kiwi all-rounder and an Aussie batsman/keeper to play in their respective ECB Southern Premier League and Hampshire League Division 2 sides.
New Zealander Charlie Wilson (24) is a seam bowling all-rounder who has just finished a strong campaign for Upper Hutt in the Wellington Premier League, scoring over 400 runs and taking 15 wickets in 13 games.
Guy Barnes is jetting over from Melbourne to play for Lymington II in the sixth tier of the Hampshire pyramid. He's a 25 year old keeper-batsman who plays for the Victoria Club Champions St Kilda.
He has just finished a very successful season for them, scoring 382 runs @ 48 and picking up 27 keeping dismissals for their 2nd XI, who were beaten second grade finalists.

The disappointment of last season's relegation behind them, Hook & Newnham Basics are preparing for a fresh start in Southern Premier Division 2 and the return of red ball 50-over cricket in tier three of the county pyramid.
There's been changes at the top with spin all-rounder Charlie Neville [left] taking the captain's armband from Josh Buckingham, who will continue to assume a high position in the batting order and keep wicket.
Neville, scored over 500 runs last season alongside taking 14 wickets, has wintered in Perth. He will have fit again opener Sam Lockwood as his vice-captain.  Lockwood ruptured an Achilles at Waterlooville last August.
Having stopped playing three years ago to train as an airline pilot, Alex Brown is back to strengthen the middle order where Matthew Buckingham has announced his retirement.
The bulk of the Hook side is home grown and under 25 years of age, with the exception of evergreen spinner Anik Divecha who starts his 20th season at KGV.
Hook began on a positive note with a victory over Basingstoke & North Hants, 16 years old Kit Morris scoring an elegant 81 on debut.

Former Havant cricketer Jez Bulled (right), a serial award winner in Southern Premier League circles, will captain Fareham & Crofton in Division 3 this summer.  He won six Premier Division titles and six T20 finals with Havant, alongside numerous wicketkeeping awards.  The trend has continued since his switch to Bath Lane, with three more individual awards in his bulging trophy cabinet.

Henry Glanfield in full cry at Hartley Wintney : Dave Vokes photo.
Key Hambledon all-rounder Henry Glanfield fears he could miss the early part of the new season after sustaining a serious hip injury during a training run.
He has been sidelined for the past seven weeks and receiving strength and conditioning treatment for the injury which has put him out of Sunday's National Village Cup tie against Hursley Park  - and, more annoyingly, a week long visit to Portugal with the Norway squad, Glanfield qualifying on account of his mother (who makes Hambledon's marvelous teas) being Norwegian.
"That really was disappointing as I'd got back in he Norway squad, now I'll have to sit quietly on the boundary and watch the lads," he said.
Hambledon have, however, received two positive pieces of news, with leg spin all-rounder Justin Behrens about to return from Cape Town for a fourth season at he Cradle of Cricket and lead Hayling Island cricketer Greg Chaplin arriving.

With former skipper Dan Harris shortly relocating to County Durham and Aussie Ben Rolfs returning to his native Melbourne after a two-year UK working stint, Alton looked set to be without two top order batsmen for the upcoming ECB Southern Premier Division campaign, on the face of it a disappointment after their best yet 2025 finish.
But just in the nick of time teenager Olly Boulton, left, has arrived at the Jubilee, announcing himself with an unbeaten century at Farnham, where he hit three sixes and ten fours in a classy 105 not out.
Boulton, previously with Easton & Martyr Worthy while he was being schooled  at Bradfield, was playing his first match on English soil after a winter playing Suburban Turf League cricket for North Perth.
Fellow debutant Harry Bater, late of Lord Wandsworth College, hit 44 before Mark Heffernan put the Farnham bowling to the sword with a blistering 61, which included three maximums.
Alton's 288-5 was always too many for Farnham, who were dismissed for 188, Dan Sumner and Boulton, bowling leg spin, sharing six of the wickets.

Calmore Sports, national Village Cup winners at Lord’s in 2021 and beaten finalists the following season, have pulled out of this season’s competition.
They were due to host Cadnam in the first round at Loperwood Park this Sunday (April 26), but their withdrawal means the New Forest club gets a walkover.
Calmore’s chairman Pete Lavelle explained: “We as a club made the difficult decision not to enter the Village Cup competition this year. There were a lot of contributing factors.
“A large percentage of our 1st XI players now have young families, all players that remain at the club who played both finals at Lords have all since had children so the commitment for Saturdays and Sundays is too much.
“We played a mixed team last year but with felt this season, with full weekends of league and T20 fixtures, and new faces ineligible for the Village Cup until the fourth round, we decided we would not enter this year, but look to return in 2027.”
Sunday’s first round ties: Hambledon v Hursley Park, Fair Oak v Ventnor, Amport v Easton and Martyr Worthy, Tichborne Park v Paultons, South Winchester v Bedhampton Mariners, Sway v Bramshaw, Bosham v Emsworth, Hadlow Down v Liphook & Ripsley, Addington 1743 v Odiham & Greywell, Grayshott v Overton.

Bashley Rydal's ground award winning squad.
Bashley (Rydal) were ECB Southern Premier League Ground of the Year winners in 2025, the seventh time the New Forest club has won the George Winkles Memorial Trophy, held in this picture by Geoff Plummer.
"The team of volunteers meet twice a week all year round (and most days during the summer) to work on the ground. Sometimes it is more like a coffee and cake get together but the work eventually gets done!," smiled Bashley chairman John Neal.
"The high standard was originally set by Geoff Plummer, who is still a keen volunteer, and his brother Chris."
Pictured with the trophy are Alan Wright, Tim Lloyd, Richard Vaughan, Terry Nash, Geoff Plummer, John Neal, Rob Ford, Kevin Kendall, Chris Holly. Steve Harris is absent as he is the only one who still works for a living.
"We also have an apprentice in Graham Pardey, who helps when he can, following in his father Brian’s footsteps," Neal added.
