Charlie Mumford's first innings 102 set up a winning position for Hampshire over Essex in their opening ECB Under-18 County Championship match at May's Bounty, Basingstoke.
He hit a 17-four hundred and shared a 99-run fifth-wicket stand with Tom Cheater (43) as Hampshire recovered to post 197 and then bowl Essex out for 153 to take a 44-run first innings lead.
Led by Joe Eckland (71), Cheater (45) and Eddie Jack (40) Hampshire racked up 267 to set Essex a 312-winning target. Jude Wright (3-31), Ethan Baker (3-76) and Conor Smith (2-48) combined to bowl Essex out for 251 and give Hampshire a 60-run victory.
Hampshire's next match is against Kent at Canterbury's Polo Fields on Tuesday, after which they host Sussex at Basingstoke.
