Two former Southern Premier League cricketers who have moved to work in the City, have helped Richmond, their adopted south-west London club, to a remarkable Middlesex County League and Cup double.
Former Basingstoke & North Hants all-rounder Will Phillips scored almost 600 runs as Richmond replaced Ealing as Middlesex League champions, while Robert Gibson’s season, truncated by overseas work commitments, made several half-centuries.
Phillips, who began his SPL career as a teenager with Hartley Wintney before joining Alton and latterly Basingstoke, struck three MCL centuries, among them an unbeaten career-best 153 when Richmond chased down a Hampstead target of 332 in June.
He played his part in this weekend’s Middlesex Cup final win over North Middlesex (257-7), scoring 38 and taking 2-60.
Former Havant opener Rob Gibson was restricted to a mere ten games for Richmond this summer, but he still chalked up six fifty-plus scores, including a season’s best 77 against Brondesbury in the final match.
