Fair Oak reached the mid-point of their debut season in Southern Premier League Division 1 with four wins, four defeats and one no-result after a two-wicket victory over lowly Old Tauntonians & Romsey.
Sri Yegnasubramanian, given a rare new-ball spell, repaid his skipper’s faith by taking 4-55 as the Oaks hosts made early inroads. OTs were in some trouble at 64-4, but made a partial recovery through Saif Achakzai (59), late of Bashley (Rydal). Connor Gibson (2-33) checked their progress, and at 113-7 a swift conclusion to the innings seemed in prospect. But Hakim Peruzi (45) hauled the visitors out of trouble before Rhys Oxley wrapped up the OTs innings with a 2-26 return.
With an OTR total of 213 to chase, Oaks were given a solid start by ex-Symondian Joe Lewis, who made 38 before being third out with 81 on the board. Fair Oak’s Aussie import Gibson then took up the cudgels with a crucial knock of 61. Tom Clark added 36, but with Joe Vaughan taking 3-46 the match was still in the balance when the eighth wicket fell, at 198.
Rhys Oxley then joined Sam Reed at the wicket and was content to play second fiddle as Reed’s unbeaten 29, off just 17 balls, took Oaks over the line at 214-8 with five balls still unused.
Waterlooville have been left marooned in the SPL's second tier drop zone after losing by 60 runs to fellow strugglers Totton & Eling. Billy Lightfoot ran through their lower order to finish with 4-29 as Ville, asked to chase T & Es 209 all out, were dismissed for 149 at Southern Gardens.
Captain Archie Reynolds (29) top scored at the top of the order as the visitors progressed to 82-2. Dan Birch (23) and Luke Anderson (21) were next highest as Ville suffered a sixth loss in eight completed Division 1 fixtures.
Earlier, an all-Taylor father and son pair shared a 50-run stand for T & E’s sixth wicket. New Gosport Borough soccer signing (from AFC Totton) Ethan Taylor hit 47, with his dad James scoring 35 before he became one of Ashan Silva’s four victims.
Silva (4-32) had removed Joe Baker for four with Jon Hudson dismissing the other opener, Bothwell Chapungu, for a duck. Reynolds (3-51) was Ville’s second highest wicket-taker, while Rajat Parmar (51) was the fixture’s sole half-century maker.
