Dave Orchard (left) led from the front with a half-century followed by a five-wicket haul as St Cross Symondians seconds maintained second place behind leaders Totton & Eling in the Southern Premier Division 2 promotion stakes with a 77-run win over Hartley Wintney.
His 58 couldn’t have come at a better time as Jamie Teale (481) had part reduced St Cross to 88-5, but Orchard’s sixth-wicket stand with Robbie Hadfield (47), which yielded just shy of a century, turned things around. Alex Woolvine, with two sixes in his 33 not out, pushed Symondians on to 266-7.
Will Kerr (43) and Hampshire Under-17 ECB cup finalist Harry Broderick (49) eased Hartley Wintney’s reply to 92-1 but Orchard’s reintroduction to proceedings once again changed the game’s direction, his 5-34 return and a 3-32 spell by William Lewis sending the visitors to 189 all out.
St Cross Symondians are effectively 13 points ahead of third placed Paultons, who trimmed lowly South Wilts II by 42 runs at Whitemoor Lane.
Left-arm spin king Andrew Denney (6-27) reluctantly found himself at the bar buying a post-match jug after his match winning figures.
Earlier, Paultons posted 256-8 through Simon Ennew (49), Scott Dawes (33), Ross Grierson (29), and Julian Drake (29), but then watched Joe Cranch (55) and Sam Arnold (76) compile a century stand.
Denney got both of them and went on to be the toast of the Paultons club after his six-wicket haul.
Immediately above South Wilts II in the log are Basingstoke and North Hants seconds – visitors to Bemerton for a crucial ‘six pointer’ on Saturday – who lost by 14-runs to Liphook and Ripsley at May’s Bounty.
Liphook’s 210 centred around Harry Munt (69), which held the innings together, with good support by Jonathan Pryce (39), the pair adding 69-runs for the fifth wicket. Hampshire Seniors’ spin pair Matt Thankachan (4-31) and Keith Harris (2-28) caught the eye.
After losing opener Steve Bucksey with 34 on the board, Josh Coombs (21) and Callum Coombs took the score to 50. But with 17 runs added they lost three wickets before Scott Dyer (67) and Josh Weir (27) put on 72 for the fifth wicket.
Thankachan and Dyer got the score to 176, but from there Liphook’s Sean Burton took over with 4-34, as Basingstoke were bowled out for 196 on the second ball of the final over.
One side in desperate need of a win are Langley Manor, who were skittled for 80 by Fair Oak, the mystiques of Rufus Bullough’s spin proving too much for them to handle. Bets were on an Oaks victory after his 5-8 haul. Fair Oak won by nine wickets. Much needed too.
