HAMPSHIRE SIXTIES
Standing (from left): Roger Forder (umpire), Graham Baker, Neil Trestrail, Chris Wood, John Rickard (Chairman), Rick Marston, Steve Mitchell, Ian Britton , Dick Batchelor (scorer). Front: Andy Steggall, Geoff Beale, Andy Weeks, Dave Simpson, Martin Shephard, Andy Pryce.
Hampshire Seniors are through to the quarter-finals of the National Sixties Championship Vase – and a home tie against Bedfordshire at Sparsholt today [Tuesday] – after a 42-run win over Norfolk, the tide turning dramatically after the 18-over second innings drinks break.
At 132 without loss chasing Hampshire’s 248-5, Norfolk appeared to have matters under control, with centurion Robin Yates (101*) and Michael Cusack (49) picking off runs as they pleased.
But when the ball was tossed to former Petersfield off-spinner Chris Wood (3-49) the game took a match defining twist. Norfolk promptly lost four wickets for three runs – two smart stumpings by former Saints midfielder Graham Baker – and dropped to 135-4, never regaining the initiative and closing at 206-4.
Earlier, Hampshire batted steadily down the order, with Neil Trestrail (35) and Andy Steggall (19) providing the base from which Geoff Beale (64), Dave Simpson (46), Iain Britton (48) and Baker (22*) were able to guide the host county into a strong position.
