Laurence Yeo [pictured] and Jasper Blackwood have given South Wilts seconds a glimmer of hope in their quest to avoid the drop into Hampshire League cricket next summer.
Yeo's 90, underpinned a critical 55-run win over fellow strugglers Fareham & Crofton, who fell apart against Blackwood's six-wicket haul.
The victory has given the seconds hope of survival, though the cancellation of tomorrow's scheduled Wilton Road match with already relegated Havant II has thrown up problems.
Havant, skittled for 37 by Hook & Newnham Basics last week, cannot raise a side. Normally that would simply be dealt with by Havant being registered a game played with a defeat, and the match itself declared a 'no result'.
But that does no favours to South Wilts, who might reasonably expect a decent points haul and improve their shallow points average. A win would put the cat amongst the proverbial pigeons at Fareham and Hook.
The Premier League may have to insist on the match being rescheduled early next month. What else can they do ?
Back on the field at Bemerton, Yeo hit two sixes and 12 fours in his 90 and, with South Wilts wobbling at 46-3, shared a recovery with James Hayward (22). Jasper Blackwood (19) and Kit Blomfield (16) added useful runs as South Wilts reached 193 all out.
Jon Tucker (33) and Jez Bulled (33) had Fareham going nicely only for them to collapse from 74-0 to 138 all out - Blackwood tearing their lower order apart with figures of 6-35. To added to Fareham's woes, Cape Town leg spin all-rounder Craig Jeffery (26) hobbled around with a damaged hamstring.
