South Wilts have their first ECB Southern Premier Division win points on the board after inflicting a crushing 108-run defeat on eight-times champions Havant at Bemerton.
It wiped away the bitter memories of a thumping nine-wicket defeat by defending champions Bashley (Rydal) 28 days earlier and boosts confidence for Ben Draper’s side ahead of Saturday’s demanding visit to title favourites St Cross Symondians.
South Wilts posted 208-7 before Arthur Godsal, Tom Grant and Jack Mynott combined to shoot Havant out for 126.
But South Wilts must have feared a repetition of the Bashley debacle (they were skittled for 79) when Tom Morton was bowled for a duck and Jack Mynott ran himself out. South Wilts 2 for two.
Jack Stearman and James Hayward steadied the ship, but the young lefty fell next, caught at slip by Chris Morgan off teenage left-armer Alfie Taw.
Hayward hadn’t scored a competitive run in May but, with anxious parental eyes looking on, rose to the occasion and made 63 in a match winning stand of 108 with Ben Draper, who went on to make 66.
Peter Roe and Arthur Godsal tried to increase the tempo, but it needed some rousing late innings hitting from Steve Warner (16 from seven balls) to hoist the total to 208-7.
Richard Jerry finished with 3-41, while teenage spinner Freddie Gadd had Pete Rowe (18) caught in his respectable 1-18 return off ten overs.
Havant’s top order was shredded by Arthur Godsal, who had the visitors rocking at 29-4 and later 49-6 – the Ealing raised all-rounder taking 3-7 in his seven overs.
But the real star of the South Wilts bowling show was former Devizes left-armer Tom Grant, who finished with phenomenal figures three for seven off ten overs, six of which were maidens.
Jez Bulled (32) and Jerry (28) rallied with a stand of 47 before Mynott (3-16) mopped up the tail and Draper bagged his third victim behind the stumps.
