Havant claimed a ‘winning draw’ in their rain-affected ECB Southern Premier Division ‘time pennant’ match at Burridge, where 24 overs were lost to the weather.
Burridge scored 245-8 off 55 overs, but Havant, with 185-3 off a further rain cut 41 overs, pocketed extra bonus points through a faster overall run rate.
Openers Burridge Sully White (31) and Joe Collings-Wells (62) shared a 97-run start for Burridge, with Richard Lock (25), Hilio de Abreu (30), Derek Kenway (36) and Dan Stancliffe (29 not out) all adding to the total.
Stuart Ransley and Pete Hopson fell cheaply but Harry Gadd (43) steadied the ship.
The unbroken stand between Richard Hindley (60 not out) and captain Chris Stone (63 not out) provided Havant with the middle-order stability that has been missing so far this season and scored at a sufficiently quick rate to glean those extra points.
Stone, who missed the opening weeks of the season with a recurring knee injury, felt under the circumstances Havant achieved all they could.
Precarious
“It was a difficult day with all the weather around,” said Stone. “We had two or three breaks for rain and lost 24 overs. When that happens in a timed game unless one side totally capitulates it is almost impossible to force a result.
“The pitch was a good one, not easy to bowl a team out on. Ultimately we got ourselves into a good position and achieved the winning draw.
“It is a shame about the weather because I think it would have been a close contest if it had gone the full length. Batting second meant that we could stay in control. We found ourselves in a slightly precarious position with two wickets down but formed a couple of good partnerships.
“It was good to see our middle order being solid because that is something we have lacked so far this season.”
The scheduled matches at Chapel Gate (Bournemouth v St Cross Symondians) and Bemerton (South Wilts v Hampshire Academy) were cancelled without a ball being bowled. It was the second consecutive rain-day for South Wilts and St Cross Symondians.
