James Hayward lit up Bemerton with a sparking century, laced with extravagant ramp and reverse sweep shots, as South Wilts rattled up an imposing 293-5 before inflicting a 95-run defeat on ECB Southern Premier Division visitors Bournemouth.
The 128, which contained three sixes and 17 fours, was Hayward’s 12th SPL hundred and set South Wilts up for a third win in four ‘white ball’ 50-over pennant matches.
The victory leaves them second in the log going into this Saturday’s opening phase of ‘red ball’ all-day Time pennant matches against Havant at Wilton Road, 11am.
South Wilts were 65-2 (Peter Rowe 23) when Hayward joined Tom Morton (89), with whom he shared a thumping 161-run stand, taking 24 runs off a savage 47th over by teenager Bournemouth spinner Jake Gordon, who was struck for two sixes and three fours off five balls.
Robbie Pack was the only Lions bowler to escape punishment, sending down his ten overs of off-spin for only 22 runs.
Only Nick Park (66) survived as Shrewton-raised left-armer Will Harries (4-30) tore into their top order – Bournemouth sinking to 87-6 when the opener was eventually dismissed.
Harries has been playing Hampshire Second XI cricket in the past week or so.
The visitors sank deeper into trouble at 112-8 when, in a late desperate attempt to secure some bonus points, Ed Denham (57) and Dom Clutterbuck (29) added 84 for the ninth wicket.
Hayward, bowling his left-arm spin, predictably had the last word, taking the final four Bournemouth wickets to finish with figures of 4-38. Bournemouth were 198 all out.
