OTs last ball match winner James Trodd.
Teenager James Trodd took a wicket with the last ball of the match to give Old Tauntonians & Romsey a dramatic two-run win over Southern Premier Division 1 rivals Rowledge at Church Road.
A fascinating contest full of twists and turns reached its climax with Rowledge, chasing OTs 213-8, requiring 16 runs from the last 12 balls and ten off Trodd’s final over and three off the last ball.
Trodd directed his final ball with pace and pinpoint accuracy, striking the top of Steve Martin’s middle stump to leave Rowledge two heart-breaking runs short of their target.
Batting first Romsey made steady progress, losing their first wicket with 30 runs on the board, Rowledge opening bowlers giving very few loose deliveries.
A second wicket partnership of 92 between Joseph Vaughan (29) and Hampshire’s Chris Wood (62) looked to be taking the game away from the home side.
Two wickets in as many overs from impressive teen Will Ryman (3-26) stemmed the flow of runs. An intense 20 overs of enthralling cricket saw wickets fall at regular intervals, as Romsey accumulated a total that both teams were reasonably pleased with. Iain Woodall making a run a ball 26 and Rowledge spinner Ollie Baker taking 3-40.
Rowledge set about the run chase watchfully as the dangerous opening seam attack of Chris Wood and James Trodd went about their business with pace and accuracy, but at 49-3 the Ledge looked to be in real trouble.
In form Aussie Fraser Wilson (42) once again dug in, with the help of Chris Board (45) and the busy Ian Metcalfe (28), they set about running the visitors ragged with a game of tip and run that appeared to be taking Rowledge home.
However, this fascinating contest had one more twist, with overs and wickets running out, the Rowledge tail faced the scenario of 16 runs from 12 balls with only one wicket remaining, each run being cheered on enthusiastically by spectators who were witnessing a great advert for southern premier league cricket.
James Trodd bowled the last over with only 10 runs in the bank. An edged boundary and several quick singles left Rowledge needing three to win from the last ball. Then Trodd struck ... and OTs celebrated !
