Australian Sam Beer and Matt Haworth ran amok with the new ball as St Cross Symondians skittled Hook & Newnham Basics for a meagre 58 before completing a six-wicket ECB Southern Premier Division victory.
But it was as much down to Hook’s inept batting as Symondians’ good bowling that the visitors were bowled out by lunch and the match ended barely an hour later.
Hook batted poorly, with opener Sam Lockwood, Harry Robson and Matt Buckingham all bagging ducks and Matt Love managing only two runs.
Beer, who won the Second Grade bowling award for his Melbourne club Prahan this past winter, and Haworth shared the spoils as Hook quickly sank to 19-4.
Stand in opener Harry Warner (26) doubled the paltry score with ex-Sparsholt spin all-rounder Liam Doran (14) alongside, but lost five team-mates before being caught at gully to give Beer his third wicket.
Beer (left), who finished with 5-24, knocked over Josh Buckingham and Jack Murrell before taking a breather with figures 5-24. Hook were 45-8, with Haworth 2-9 off his six overs. Hook only managed 13 more runs before Hampshire’s Felix Organ (2-8) took the last two wickets.
St Cross didn’t exactly cruise to victory, contriving to lose four wickets – two of them to off-spinner Aniket Divecha (2-25) – before young Ben Foster (16) and Matt Stokes (14) got them across the line in the 16th over. Sam Beer picture courtesy of Roy Honeybone.
