Hook & Newnham Basics’ promoted second team lie second, just behind leaders Hambledon, in Southern Premier Division 3 after a narrow nine-run win over their Basingstoke & North Hants counterparts at May’s Bounty.
Kevin Light (61) and recent signing (from US Portsmouth) Tom May (44) underpinned Hook’s total of 196-9, with Charlie Neville (26), Will Gardner and Liam Shore adding handy late runs.
The game was in the balance when Craig Williamson (49) and Harith Jayakody (26) took Basingstoke’s reply to 122-4 and when Steve Bucksey (38) and Neil Shelar (28) were together at 171-5, a Bounty victory looked a distinct possibility.
But left-arm quick Shore (3-31) nipped out the sixth-wicket pair in quick succession and Basingstoke were left stranded on 187-8, nine runs behind.
At the opposite end of the table, Hythe & Dibden suffered a fourth successive defeat when Langley Manor successfully defended 198-9 to beat them by 53 runs at Jones Lane.
The Manor’s success was built around a 92-run launch by Jack Budd (72) and Conor Browne (29), with James Purnell (31) adding useful runs in the middle-order.
Hythe made a losing 249-4 in their curtain raiser at May’s Bounty, but have struggled to score runs ever since. Only Matt Young and Wayne Royan made over 20 as the Watersiders tumbled to 145 all out.
