Hook & Newnham Basics’ last three wickets yielded 127 runs to release the mid-afternoon grip Sarisbury Athletic enjoyed on their embryo top Southern Premier League Division 1 meeting at Allotment Road.
The splendid rearguard action, initiated by Martyn James and subsequently fought by Shane Brewer, Liam Shore and Aniket Divecha, enabled Hook to recover from a potentially disastrous 109-7 and post 236 before bowling previously unbeaten Sarisbury out for 96.
Hook went on to win by 140 runs to record a third successive win, the victory enabling the North Hampshire side to eke out a 16-point lead at the top.
Having lost their first three wickets for 26 (Chris Sanders 2-33), Hook progressed to 72 without further loss, largely on the strength of Josh Buckingham (40) and Rhodes Franklin (20).
But a three-wicket burst by Jason Allmark (3-22) left them back in the lurch at 109-7.
Brewer (440 and James (26) then added 77 before Tom Kitcher (2-50) nipped out both batsmen to leave the visitors 188-9.
Hook’s fightback wasn’t finished, with Liam Shore (21 not out) and last man Divecha (22) teasing Sarisbury with a tenth-wicket partnership of 48 to raise the HNB total to 236 all out.
Ricky Rawlins (42) eased Sarisbury’s reply to 50 without loss when James (2-27) struck twice in four balls.
Sarisbury inched on to 76 before suffering a calamitous collapse – the next seven wickets falling for a mere 20 runs, Jack Murrell finishing with 5-23 and spinner Divecha 3-14. They were 96 all out.
