James Degg toasts his second South Wilts SPL hundred : Roy Honeybone
JAMES Degg hit a classy 135 as South Wilts extended their unbeaten start to the ECB Southern Premier League season with a comprehensive 123-run win over Bashley (Rydal) at Bemerton.
It was Degg's second and highest SPL hundred for South Wilts, whom he joined in 2023 while studying at Southampton Solent University. He played his formative cricket in Devon.
It underpinned a formidable 289 against weakened Bashley, half of last season's side having left for 'greener pastures' in the winter.
Degg hit 16 boundaries and dominated a 135-run second-wicket partnership with Cape Town's Josh Chippendale (58), who struck a maiden SPL fifty.
Michael Porter rotated Bashley's bowling options, using eight including his own brand of under-used leg spin.
He dismissed the South African before Tom Cheater (32) and Archie Fairfax-Ross (23 not out) advanced the total beyond Bashley's reach.
Having sizzled in the heat for over three hours, Bashley inevitably lost wickets and were 95-6 before Louis Prichard (45) and George Wilson (27) put a reasonable reply on the board.
South Wilts gradually chipped away, with Fairfax-Ross taking 3-37 with his left-spin as Bashley dropped to 166 all out.
