Basingstoke & North Hants seconds had to quell a remarkable performance by Purbrook all-rounder Josh McCoy before chasing down the visitors’ 199-8 to win by eight wickets with 21 balls to spare.
The Southern Premier Division 3 match at May’s Bounty looked set for an early finish after a triple new ball strike by Chris Chandler (3-32) left Purbrook wobbling at 18-3 and later 94-7.
But McCoy, who was once on the Hampshire Academy books, kept Purbrook afloat with a stunning 116, which included a six and 19 fours. He shared an 80-run stand late on with Ian Limb (18).
McCoy (2-36) then laced up his bowling boots to have Craig Williamson caught, but led by Laurence Benge (73), Basingstoke took the run chase in their stride, the opener sharing a century partnership with Josh Coombs (51), who completed his half-century alongside fellow teenager Neil Shelar (42) just before the target was achieved.
Shelar is also making his mark in the county junior age group arena, hitting an unbeaten 75 to steer Hampshire to a five-wicket win over Gloucestershire in the ECB Under-15 County Cup.
With Tichborne Park having now lost nine matches in a row since beating Trojans in round one, it looks to be a simple shoot out between Hythe & Dibden and Purbrook as to who also plays Hampshire League cricket next season.
Tichborne’s demise is out of control – promotion chasing Hook & Newnham Basics II restricting them to 83-9 before cantering to an eight-wicket win. Ollie May (4-10), Will Gardner (3-16) and Joe Allnutt (31 not out) did the Hook spadework.
