Victorious Calmore Sports captain Mark Lavelle took five wickets for seven runs off his ten overs, six of which were maidens, against Southern Premier League Division 1 strugglers Ventnor at Loperwood Park.
Ventnor were going nicely at 61 without loss through an eight-four onslaught by Chris Russell (41) and Mark Fletcher (35) – but the innings fell apart when Lavelle came on to bowl.
As Lavelle sliced through the Ventnor top order to record a sixth five-wicket haul, Fletcher held firm, eventually being seventh out at 99 before George Willis made a sprightly 26 not out to take the visitors to 139-9.
Calmore looked like cruising it once openers Lavelle (32) and Jake Easton (20) put 69 on the board, but a five-wicket burst by Rob Snell (5-36) at least ensured that Ventnor went down fighting by four wickets. It was Calmore’s first win in three.
