Sparsholt received lavish praise for the staging of the fourth game in the England Australia over 60s series.
Dubbed the “Grey Ashes” England levelled things up at two-all in the best of five event with a thrilling game at the Norman Edwards Ground.
Chasing 243 to win England would get there at the cost of 5 wickets and with 4 overs to spare, writes Andy Steggall.
For England captain Edward Gordon Lennox the victory was special and, so he says, was the venue and the club. “The day couldn’t have been more perfect, the result of course helped, but we can’t thank Sparsholt enough for embracing everything we hold dear - playing this form of cricket. The club’s support and the facilities are as good as anything we’ve seen on our travels both here and abroad.”
He added, “the club showed itself for the care and attention it clearly puts into all its cricket. We saw the juniors playing small games before our match, we saw the family atmosphere that surrounds the place, we heard their very own passionate barmy army who helped get us over the line and saw amazing support for both sides.”
Andy Worth, Sparsholt club chairman added “It was a big responsibility when Sparsholt was selected to host the game. We pride ourselves on being a club that is so much greater than the sum of its parts. And having been voted the best cricket wicket in the Southern Premier League last year it meant we were sure that the playing conditions would be up to scratch.. and what a match it turned out to be."
