Andover and Langley Manor look to put heir finishing touch to their respective Southern Premier League promotion campaigns before the curtain comes down on a sun drenched season.
They both need six points from their last matches, Andover from the visit of Hook & Newnham Basics to London Road (1230) to finish runners-up to Hambledon in Division 2, and Langley Manor likewise from Sway’s trip to Knellers Lane.
Hambledon are holding a championship party for the derby with near neighbours Waterloville at Ridge Meadow, where South African run gun Matt DeVilliers is eager to expand his record breaking 1202 haul, which contains five hundreds.
Little left-hand opener George Marshall is chasing a third successive ton, having made centuries against Hartley Wintney and Bashley (Rydal) II in the past fortnight.
Hambledon: George Marshall, Daniel McGovern, Matt de Villiers, Henry Glanfield, Chris Pratt, Jonty Oliver, Spencer Leclercq, Ed Moger, Mark Butcher, Shahryar Khan, Ben Harding
Andover teen opener Sam Ashman (pictured left) has also enjoyed a run strewn summer, 552 for Andover in SPL2 – and more this week for Hampshire Under-18s against Middlesex YCs at Merchant Taylor’s School.
Ashman is only 15 years of age, but that didn’t stop him scoring 69 and 78 as Hampshire slithered to an innings defeat.
The Lions host relegation threatened Hook & Newnham Basics II, while fellow strugglers Fawley could escape with a home win over Hartley Wintney. Bashley seconds go to St Cross Symondians II also needing a win.
Andover: Nyumbu, Roberts, Adams, Ashman, S Williams, H Williams, Jansen, Hooper, Blackburn, Ayers, Veettil.
If Andover were to slip up, OTs & Romsey are there to pounce, but they must beat a youthful Fair Oak, who give opportunities to 16-year olds Lewis Goodyear, an off-spinner who has taken over 50 competitive wickets, and batsman Tom Clark.
“Against OTs we’ll be fielding five U19s, one U21 and two U23s, so these are exciting times in our youth development,” says Gregor McKenzie, Oaks captain.
Fair Oak: N. Doubell, H. Reed, G. McKenzie, M. McKenzie, R. Oxley, T. Clark, M. Abbas, R. Featherstone, R. Stewart, B. Smith, L. Goodyear.
A week or two ago the meet up between Langley Manor and Sway looked set to decide who took the runners-up spot behind SPL3 champions Portsmouth & Southsea.
But Sway’s became erratic and unless there’s a major upset at Knellers Lane, Jack Budd will be buying the celebratory beers. Skipper Tim Noble returns or Sway.
Sway: Tim Noble, Alex Hall, Greg Jones, Dave Steadman, Hugh Bernard, Tom Burton, Toby Ramwell, Jon Grasham, Richard Thomas, Steve How, Jon Waller.
