Hook & Newnham Basics remain top of Southern Premier League Division 1 – but their fourth straight win at the expense winless New Milton was far from straightforward, as their 13-run margin of victory would suggest.
The Green & Golds, beaten for a fourth time, gave chased to Hook’s 261 and finished with a creditable 248, having threatened their hosts at 218-5 at one stage of their reply.
But the endeavours of Ryan Beck (60), Lee Beck (56), James Haggaty (49) and Dan Loader (41) ultimately left New Milton frustrated as the last five wickets fell for 30 runs.
New Milton were in the ball game earlier as well, but from 104-4 Josh Buckingham (77), aided by Harry Warner (45) and Rhodes Franklin (40) hoisted the Hook score to 261, just beyond Milton’s reach.
An unbroken stand of 70 for the eighth wicket between Matt Hooper (49 not out) and Mike Adams (21 not out) hauled Andover out of the mire and set up a nervy victory over Calmore Sports at London Road.
Chasing Calmore’s 186, Andover dropped to 82-6 and later 117-7 (Mark Lavelle 3-18), but were revived by their captain and Adams.
Calmore, in contrast, began well through Southampton Solent University’s Jake Easton (51) and Ben Johns (30) but, having reached 112-2, capitulated with Mike West (38 not out) seeing eight team-mates depart for the addition of only 74 runs.
David Lloyd’s innings of 87 not only held the Rowledge innings together, but set up an 87-run win over Sarisbury Athletic at Church Road.
He was the only Rowledge batsman to make over 20 of his side’s 198-9 after Chris Sanders (3-11 off ten overs) had left the top order in disarray at 66-5.
But Rowledge recovered to post 198-9 and then, with William Ryman taking a best yet 5-24, dismissed the visitors for 111.
