Alex Ayers celebrates his unbeaten century [Dave Vokes]
t Cross Symondians’ teenage prospect Alex Ayers is believed to have several First Class counties eyeing his potential after sinking Hook & Newnham Basics with a one-man salvo which brought the Winchester club the Hampshire Under-17 Kerry Cup.
Ayers, who enjoyed a successful term at Dauntsey’s School before joining St Cross, didn’t make the cut for this season’s Hampshire Under-17 side.
But he’s touted his name around in spectacular style after smashing an unbeaten 113 off only 73 balls in the May’s Bounty final.
Ayers quickly lost three batting partners to lanky left-armer Liam Shore (3-15) but seized the initiative himself by cracking six on-side sixes and nine fours in his 113, made out of a St Cross total of 170-5.
But shell shocked Hook hadn’t seen the last of Ayers, who later popped up with the ball, taking 3-14 as HNB made 128-6 (Rupert Armstrong 45) in reply.
Results:
Semi-finals
Portsmouth & Southsea 135-5 (Sherry 51, Kanavan 41, Trussler 3-22)
St Cross Symondians 139-5 (Byers 64, Z Organ 32*, Trussler 31, Turner 2-22)
St Cross Symondians won by five wickets.
South Wilts 114-6 (Highton 27, Stearman 22)
Hook & Newnham Basics 117-1 (Brown 77*)
Hook & Newnham Basics won by nine wickets.
Final

Hook & Newnham Basics 128-6 (Armstrong 45, Gardner 26*, Ayers 3-14)
