A six-wicket win over Calmore Sports has given Old Tauntonians & Romsey the perfect lift-off for a three-match sequence that will determine their immediate Southern Premier League future.
Promoted amid high drama at Hartley Wintney on the final day of the 2017 season, OTs have hovered around the Division 1 danger zone all summer long.
But the crucial win at Loperwood Park has inched them out of the immediate two-down relegation zone and set up a critical three weeks in which they will visit Liphook & Ripsley and Ventnor, either side of hosting Hartley Wintney.
Danny Mogg, pictured by Terry Jamieson, who sent down seven maidens in returning figures of three wickets for only eight runs, rattled a weakened Calmore with two strikes with the new ball and from 29-3 it was always an uphill struggle for last year’s SPL1 winners.
Mike West (26) and Michael Cook (24) steadied the ship, but the Newman brothers Peter (2-32) and Rob (1-15) maintained a tight line.
Calmore’s innings ended in bizarre fashion as ‘Nelson’ struck four times – Joe Vaughan (2-4) taking two of the four wickets that fell on the dreaded 111 !
OTs were seldom under pressure as they successfully chased down Calmore’s eventual 116 – skipper Jody Brown letting an all-teenage top four take them to the brink of victory.
Vaughan (27) and Elliott Mitchell-Lee (22) provided the firm base from which Jovan Dhariwal (24) and Harry Tulk (21) pushed them close to the target. Rob Newman settled it with a big six.
