Totton & Eling seamer Hakim Peruzi produced a career-best league spell of 5-12 as Portsmouth crashed to 92 all out and a third successive Southern Premier Division 1 defeat by 56 runs.
He shot out five of Portsmouth’s top six batsmen as the city club slumped to 45-8 after Totton’s 169 all out had been reduced by rain to a target of 149 from 32 overs.
Bowling from the sea end at St Helen’s, Peruzi (left) whipped out Jack Marston, Ben Duggan and Alex Hammond before wicketkeeper Oli Thomas picked up the first of three victims by stumping Will Smitherman off spinner Brighton Mugochi (1-21), operating from the pavilion end. It left Portsmouth 17-4.
Peruzi went on to celebrate his maiden 'five-fer' return in SPL cricket by removing Hermanshu Hirani and skipper James Christian to deepen the Portsmouth crisis at 36-6.
“Hakim bowled the perfect pace and length on that pitch and was often unplayable,” said team-mate James Taylor.
Two wickets for teenager debutant Toby Green (2-11) and another by Ethan Taylor left the hosts 45-8 before ninth-wicket pair Dan Wallis (26) and Andrew Marston (23 not out) doubled the score before Leo Taylor completed the rout at 92 all out.
Totton & Eling didn’t make the best start themselves with James Taylor and Owen Morris being removed for ducks (4-2), but Harrison Clarke (42) and Ethan Taylor (42) got their heads down and provided the platform for what proved a more than competitive total.
Mugochi (27) twice cleared the boundary rope, as did Tommy Cheater (18) as vital middle-order runs were added alongside Sam Bracey (17) before Henry Woolf (3-21) and Dan Wallis (3-31) wrapped up the innings off the last ball.
The other four SPL1 matches at Rowledge, Sarisbury Athletic, Sparsholt and St Cross Symondians II were washed out.
