ujeeth Daini celebrated his maiden Portsmouth century – but the city side was frustrated by Bashley Rydal’s last-wicket pair in an ECB Southern Premier League run-fest in the New Forest
Wicket-keeper Daini [left] belted an unbeaten 129 off 105 balls, with 12 fours and five sixes, as the visitors posted 317-4 declared, Ben Duggan making 43 and skipper Dan Wimble 33.
Daini shared a superb unbroken fifth wicket stand of 219 with Mohammed Ashraful, back in the Portsmouth team after missing two weeks due to his Rangpur Riders coaching commitments in the Guyana-based Global T20 League. The former Bangladesh Test skipper played second fiddle to Daini, ending unbeaten on 91.
Bashley’s top order found runs just as comfortable to come by, ex-Havant star Louis Clayton (51) and teen Ethan Baker (75) putting on 112 before Jack Stearman (65) and Will Tripcony (40) advanced the visitors’ score to 202-2. They were still going nicely at 237-3 and Michael Porter (21) at the crease.
From nowhere, spin pair Raksith Rao and Freddie Gadd bowled Portsmouth in a winning position. Rao dismissed Stearman and Dan Goodey in the same over, and three wickets had tumbled in five balls when Gadd trapped Josh Digby leg before.
That left Bashley’s last-wicket pair of George Wilson and Dan Friedman to survive the final 23 balls of the match. This they did, the hosts ending on 288-9 with Gadd taking 4-64 and Rao 4-81.
